Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar recently celebrated its graduation and Dean Michael Trick reflected on the institution’s 20-year journey. The university focuses on providing experiential learning opportunities both inside and outside the classroom, with courses involving external clients and project-based learning to tackle real-world challenges. Students are encouraged to participate in internships and independent research, supported by a robust career development program.

The institution has evolved to meet the changing needs of the workforce, expanding its programs from business administration and computer science to include biological sciences and information systems tailored to address the growth of Qatar’s economy. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) across all programs is a key focus, with students equipped to leverage AI in their respective fields to drive innovation.

International exposure is a crucial aspect of the Carnegie Mellon in Qatar experience, with students spending at least one semester abroad to enhance their understanding of the global economy. The university continually adapts its curriculum to align with Qatar’s evolving economy, offering courses in emerging fields such as Islamic finance, sustainability, entrepreneurship, and new minors like Tech Entrepreneurship and Multidisciplinary Energy Studies.

Initiatives like the AI + Finance certificate and student competitions foster innovation and entrepreneurship, highlighting the university’s holistic approach to student development. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are core values at Carnegie Mellon, with dedicated efforts focused on ongoing improvement in this area. Research endeavors at the university span across various fields such as sustainability, AI, robotics, economics, and genetics, addressing pressing challenges in society.

Dean Trick reaffirms the institution’s commitment to preparing students for impactful careers in a rapidly changing world. As Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar continues to adapt and innovate, it remains dedicated to providing a high-quality education that equips students with the skills and experiences necessary to excel in their chosen fields.
