The upcoming Dh128-billion Al Maktoum Airport in Dubai South is set to be a mega project that will not face any financing issues, according to Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman and CEO of Emirates Airline and Group. He mentioned that many local and global firms will be interested in funding various aspects of the airport, from baggage handling systems to terminals. This announcement was made during a media briefing at the Arabian Travel Market.

The Dubai government recently announced that all operations at Dubai International (DXB) airport will be moved to Al Maktoum International Airport in Dubai South over the next 10 years. With a passenger capacity of 260 million per annum, the airport is expected to fully absorb Dubai airport operations. Construction will take about 8 to 10 years for the passenger terminal alone, along with the expansion to accommodate 5 runways.

Emirates airline, the largest buyer of the Boeing 777-X, expressed dissatisfaction with the delays in the delivery of the 400-seat plane. Originally due in 2020, Boeing now expects the first delivery in 2025. Sheikh Ahmed emphasized the importance of Boeing’s new management putting in efforts to fix the issues and deliver the aircraft on time. This delay puts pressure on Dubai and Emirates’ fleet, leading the airline to extend the refurbishment program of its existing fleet.

In terms of annual results, Sheikh Ahmed mentioned that Emirates airline is set to announce their results soon and expects them to be better. He highlighted that for Dubai, maintaining service levels at the top is crucial, and the construction of the new airport will aid in ensuring that there are no constraints on roads and traffic. The goal is to offer top-notch services to passengers, which might not be possible if operations continue at DXB beyond a certain period.

The strategic relocation of airport operations to Al Maktoum International Airport is a crucial step in Dubai’s aviation development plans. With a focus on service excellence and meeting the growing demands of travelers, the new airport will play a key role in enhancing the overall aviation infrastructure in the region. The availability of funds from local and global firms indicates the strong interest and confidence in the success of this ambitious project.

In conclusion, the development of Al Maktoum Airport in Dubai South is a significant milestone for the aviation industry in Dubai. The seamless transition of operations from DXB to the new airport reflects the city’s commitment to innovation and growth in the aviation sector. With adequate funding and a clear timeline for construction, the airport is poised to become a major hub for international travel. The challenges posed by delays in aircraft deliveries and the need for service quality assurance reinforce the importance of strategic planning and collaboration within the industry.
