More than 4,000 people gathered in Brussels to protest against the political right and racism. Organized by the Anti-fascist Coordination of Belgium (CAB), the march brought together various social movements and organizations. This demonstration marked the second major protest in the Belgian capital denouncing the far-right parties since the EU elections on June 9th, where right and far-right parties gained significant victories.

Members of CAB highlighted the importance of sending a message of hope in response to the messages of despair spread by the far right. Sixtine Van Outryve, a CAB member, emphasized the need for solidarity regardless of nationality, income, or occupation. The goal is to advocate for a society that promotes unity, inclusivity, and rejects racism and sexism, amidst a concerning trend of far-right discourse normalization.

The recent EU elections saw notable successes for right and far-right parties across Europe. In France, Marine Le Pen’s National Rally achieved first place with over 31% of the votes, prompting President Emmanuel Macron to dissolve the National Assembly. Similarly, in Italy, Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy secured the most votes. In Germany, the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) surged to second place, displacing Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democrats.

Amidst these victories for right-leaning and populist parties in various countries, demonstrators in Brussels aimed to challenge the notion that the rise of the far-right was inevitable. Participants emphasized the importance of confronting these ideologies by promoting social and democratic alternatives. A 17-year-old protester named Henri stated that the youth continue to resist and fight against far-right ideas, illustrating that not all young people are swayed by such ideologies.

The demonstration in Brussels serves as a reminder of the power of collective action in opposing far-right movements and promoting unity and inclusion. By coming together from diverse backgrounds and affiliations, protesters aim to combat the normalization of divisive rhetoric and advocate for a society that values diversity and equality.

The march in Brussels reflects a broader global trend towards resistance against far-right ideologies and movements. It signals a call to action for individuals to stand together in solidarity and actively oppose racism, sexism, and discrimination. Through peaceful protests and advocacy, demonstrators hope to create a more inclusive and equitable society for all, countering the spread of divisive and harmful far-right narratives.
