Negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union are a top priority, with both sides aiming for an “early and ambitious” deal. The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed this after bilateral talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in Vadodara. Discussions covered a wide range of topics, including trade, defence, and technology collaboration. The negotiations aim to enhance trade and investments between the two regions, with the focus on reducing tariffs, addressing market access challenges, and facilitating investment flows.

After the inauguration of the Tata-Airbus C-295 aircraft assembly facility in Vadodara, PM Modi and Sanchez met at the historic Laxmi Vilas Palace. The palace, constructed in the late 19th century, holds a special significance as Modi reminisced about his start as a Member of Parliament and later as Prime Minister in Vadodara. Both leaders shared lunch and discussed the importance of the visit during the festival of Deepawali, symbolizing light and new beginnings. The meeting was an opportunity to strengthen the relationship between India and Spain.

During the bilateral talks, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in railways was signed to enhance maintenance, safety, and training aspects. This signifies the growing economic partnership between the two countries, with total trade reaching USD 10 billion. The investment by various companies in each other’s countries is also on the rise. The signing of the MoU and the inauguration of the TASL-Airbus facility highlight the commitment to deeper cooperation in various sectors, including defence.

The ongoing negotiations on the FTA between India and the EU have seen periods of stagnation and revival since 2007. With an emphasis on an early and ambitious agreement, both India and Spain are keen on finalizing a deal that benefits both sides. Talks were intensified in 2021 after an eight-year hiatus, focusing on reducing tariffs and addressing market access challenges. The agreement is aimed at boosting bilateral trade and investments between the two regions, paving the way for increased economic cooperation.

Prime Minister Modi welcomed Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez to India, expressing his delight at the visit during the festival of Deepawali in Vadodara. The warm welcome extended by Modi highlighted the significance of the meeting and the energy it brought to the relationship between the two countries. The discussions covered a wide range of topics, including trade, defence, and technology collaboration, reflecting the shared interests and mutual benefits of cooperation. The signing of the MoU on cooperation in railways and the inauguration of the TASL-Airbus facility further underscore the commitment to strengthening ties.

Overall, the bilateral talks between India and Spain in Vadodara reaffirmed the commitment to enhancing economic cooperation and strengthening the relationship between the two countries. The focus on the FTA negotiations, the signing of key MoUs, and the inauguration of important facilities demonstrate the mutual interest in deepening collaboration in various sectors. Both sides are working towards an early and ambitious agreement that will benefit both India and the European Union, paving the way for increased trade and investments between the two regions.
