Bayern Munich has officially signed Portugal midfielder Joao Palhinha from Fulham for a reported fee of 49 million euros after a long pursuit. The 28-year-old has signed a four year contract with the club, making it a dream come true for him. Despite coming close to acquiring Palhinha last year, the deal fell through just before the transfer window closed. Sporting director Max Eberl emphasized the importance of not losing touch with the player, who was highly sought after by Bayern.

Palhinha, who has 31 international appearances and two goals for Portugal, participated in the team’s Euro 2024 campaign that ended in the quarter finals. His signing marks Bayern’s third major arrival of the summer, alongside forward Michael Olise and centre-back Hiroki Ito. Manager Vincent Kompany, who took over at the end of last season, will be tasked with rebuilding the club after a trophy-less season. The pressure is on for Kompany to lead Bayern back to the top of German football after their 11-year Bundesliga title streak was broken.

Last season, Bayern was eliminated in the Champions League semi-finals by Real Madrid, while Bayer Leverkusen secured the league and cup double under manager Xabi Alonso. With the Champions League final set to be held at Bayern’s Allianz Arena next season, Kompany faces added expectations to lead the team to success. The signing of Palhinha, along with other key arrivals, reflects Bayern’s commitment to strengthening the squad and competing for titles in the upcoming season.
