The Ministry of Oil and Environment in Bahrain is implementing various strategies to combat illegal fishing practices in the country’s territorial waters. In response to concerns raised by a Shura Council member, the Ministry has detailed a comprehensive approach that includes technological advancements and inter-agency collaboration. One of the key measures taken by the Ministry is the electronic linking with Customs Affairs to ensure smart surveillance of marine resource import, export, and re-export. This system helps in preventing the entry of prohibited fishing equipment and verifying the authenticity of imported fish.

Another important aspect of the Ministry’s strategy is working closely with the Cybercrime Directorate at the Ministry of Interior to monitor and curb the illegal online trade of prohibited fishing tools and equipment. Additionally, the Ministry is collaborating with the Survey and Land Registration Bureau to establish a smart monitoring room equipped with an Automatic Identification System (AIS) to enhance real-time surveillance and detection capabilities significantly. These technological advancements complement the ongoing joint operations with the Coast Guard and the General Directorate of Marine Wealth at the Supreme Council for the Environment. The collaborative efforts have resulted in numerous arrests for various violations in 2024, including the illegal sale and trade of shrimp during closed seasons, illegal sale and trade of undersized fish and shellfish, and unlicensed fishing activities.

In addition to the crackdown on illegal fishing practices, the Ministry is also working on a new law to regulate recreational fishing in Bahrain. The increasing popularity of recreational fishing has raised concerns about overfishing, damage to sensitive habitats, and a lack of accountability for irresponsible practices. The new legislation aims to address these concerns by establishing clear guidelines for licensing, permitted fishing methods, catch limits, and penalties for violations.

Apart from enforcement measures, the Ministry is also focusing on raising public awareness about the importance of marine resource conservation. Regular meetings and workshops with fishermen’s associations are organized to educate stakeholders on existing regulations and emphasize the crucial role of fishermen in monitoring illegal activities. By engaging with the fishing community and promoting responsible practices, the Ministry aims to protect Bahrain’s marine environment and ensure sustainable fishing practices in the future.

Overall, the Ministry of Oil and Environment in Bahrain is taking proactive steps to combat illegal fishing practices through a combination of technology, inter-agency collaboration, and public awareness initiatives. By leveraging these strategies, the Ministry is working towards protecting marine resources, enforcing regulations, and promoting sustainable fishing practices in Bahrain’s territorial waters. With ongoing efforts to enhance surveillance capabilities, regulate recreational fishing, and raise awareness among stakeholders, the Ministry is committed to preserving the marine ecosystem for future generations.
