After an illustrious career in tennis, Austria’s Dominic Thiem bid farewell to the sport on home ground at the Vienna Open. Despite a valiant effort, Thiem was defeated by Luciano Darderi in straight sets, marking the end of his career due to a long-term wrist injury. The former US Open champion had previously announced his retirement earlier this year, acknowledging the futility of his attempts to fully recover from the injury sustained in 2021.

Despite initially putting up a fight in the first set, Thiem ultimately succumbed to the young Italian player, who outplayed him in the second set. Addressing the crowd after the match, Thiem expressed his gratitude for their unwavering support throughout his career, which he described as an “absolute dream.” The 31-year-old, who currently holds a ranking of 318th, required a wildcard entry to participate in the ATP 500 event in Vienna, highlighting the decline in his career since his US Open triumph in 2020.

Following his injury in 2021, Thiem’s performance suffered, leading to a significant drop in his ranking and limited tournament participation. Despite the setbacks, Thiem managed to secure 17 career titles and over $30 million in prize money throughout his career. The tennis community, including players like Alexander Zverev and Boris Becker, paid tribute to Thiem in a farewell celebration attended by thousands of fans at Vienna’s Stadthalle. Video messages from the likes of Djokovic, Nadal, and Federer praised Thiem for his positive demeanor and camaraderie on and off the court.

Thiem’s retirement marks the end of an era in Austrian tennis, as the former world number three leaves behind a legacy of determination and sportsmanship. While his departure may leave a void in the tennis world, it also opens up opportunities for emerging players to make their mark on the sport. Thiem’s resilience in the face of adversity serves as a reminder of the challenges athletes must overcome in pursuit of their goals, inspiring future generations to persevere in the face of setbacks.

As Thiem embarks on a new chapter in his life post-tennis, fans and fellow players alike will undoubtedly miss his presence on the court. His contributions to the sport and his impact on the tennis community will be remembered for years to come. While his retirement may signal the end of his professional tennis career, Thiem’s journey serves as a testament to the dedication and passion required to succeed at the highest levels of the sport. As one chapter closes, another begins for Dominic Thiem, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the world of tennis.
