The Arabian Oryx Sanctuary in the Wilayat of Haima in Al Wusta Governorate of Oman has seen a significant increase in visitors, with over 1,300 people exploring the area since the beginning of 2024. This surge in tourism is not just for leisure, but also plays a vital role in supporting ecotourism and promoting the preservation of heritage and environmental treasures in the region.

Sultan Mohammed Al Balushi, Director of the Arabian Oryx Department, emphasized the importance of the sanctuary as a hub for wildlife conservation and a catalyst for economic development through eco-tourism initiatives. The reserve encompasses ambitious projects, such as the planting of 80,000 wild trees to increase vegetation cover and rehabilitate natural habitats, with the goal of maintaining ecosystems. Additionally, infrastructure enhancements are underway to further enhance the attraction of the reserve.

The vast Arabian Oryx Sanctuary spans 2,824 square kilometers and boasts a variety of wildlife, including approximately 900 Arabian Oryx, along with sand gazelles, Arabian gazelles, Nubian ibex, sand foxes, striped hyenas, wild rabbits, and honey badgers. This rich biodiversity enriches the experience of visitors and deepens their understanding of the natural heritage of Oman. The reserve also plays a crucial role in raising awareness of Oman’s ancient environmental and geological history through a mini-exhibition showcasing its establishment and development, as well as its cultural and geological connection to the region and its people.

Advanced technologies like collars for tracking herds of Arabian oryx, Arabian gazelles, and sand gazelles have been implemented in the reserve to monitor their natural migration patterns and historical ranges, providing valuable insights into their habitats. In April, 50 sand gazelles were released into the reserve to bolster biodiversity and ensure the sustainability of the region’s ecosystem. These initiatives not only contribute to the conservation of wildlife but also support the overall biodiversity of the area.

The Arabian Oryx Sanctuary serves as a beacon of environmental and cultural education for visitors, offering a glimpse into Oman’s rich natural history. The reserve’s efforts in preserving endangered species and maintaining ecological balance not only create a unique experience for tourists but also play a significant role in preserving the region’s heritage for future generations. The integration of technology in wildlife monitoring and habitat management underscores the commitment of the reserve to sustainable conservation practices and underscores its role as a leader in responsible eco-tourism efforts in Oman.

In conclusion, the Arabian Oryx Sanctuary in Haima is not just a tourism destination but a vital conservation site that plays a pivotal role in protecting the natural heritage of Oman. By blending environmental preservation with economic development, the reserve is paving the way for sustainable eco-tourism in the region. With ongoing initiatives to enhance infrastructure, introduce new species, and integrate advanced technologies, the sanctuary is poised to continue its legacy as a model for wildlife conservation and environmental stewardship in the Sultanate of Oman.
