Motorists are being reminded by authorities to check their blind spots before overtaking another vehicle to reduce the risk of collisions. In a social media post, Abu Dhabi Police emphasized the importance of gradually reducing speed before overtaking to avoid sudden diversions of vehicles. Drivers are advised to adjust their car mirrors, keep windows clean, and maintain a safe distance from other cars to prevent accidents. The use of a car’s blind spot warning system is encouraged to alert drivers of nearby passing vehicles or vehicles in their blind spots.

The blind spot warning system uses sensors on the rear bumper and side mirrors to check for cars in blind spots or adjacent lanes, reducing collision risks. This advisory is also applicable to drivers of heavy vehicles in Abu Dhabi. Starting January 29, heavy vehicles were allowed to use the second right lane for overtaking on Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed International Street. Heavy vehicle drivers are reminded to adhere to guidelines, stick to the right lane, check blind spots before overtaking, use signals early on, and return to the right lane after overtaking.

Using the shoulder for overtaking can obstruct emergency vehicles and result in serious violations with fines and black points. In Ajman, authorities have also reminded motorists to use indicators when changing lanes, follow safety guidelines during rain, avoid distracted driving, and not exceed speed limits. Sudden deviation or swerving were among the top five violations that accounted for a significant percentage of road fatalities and injuries in the UAE in 2023. The Ministry of Interior reported an increase in road fatalities last year compared to previous years.

Authorities are urging motorists to drive safely and follow guidelines to prevent accidents and ensure road safety. Adhering to speed limits, using indicators, checking blind spots, and avoiding distracted driving are essential practices for all drivers on the road. By being aware of their surroundings, maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles, and obeying traffic laws, motorists can contribute to reducing accidents and fatalities on the roads. Stay informed with the latest news and safety tips to protect yourself and others while driving.
