Sheikh Yusuf Bin Issa Cultural Award Announces Second Edition

The Sheikh Yusuf Bin Issa Cultural Award held a press conference to announce details for its second edition for the years 2026-2027. The event was attended by various cultural and media figures as well as representatives from supporting institutions. This year’s initiative aims to celebrate creativity and elevate the historical significance of its namesake, Sheikh Yusuf Bin Issa Al-Qunaie, who played a vital role in Kuwait’s cultural and educational renaissance.

Significance of Cultural Development

Dr. Abdulaziz Sultan Al-Issa, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Sheikh Yusuf Bin Issa Cultural Award, emphasized that cultural development contributes significantly to advancing human awareness and enhancing societal values such as equality and mutual understanding. According to him, a society investing in culture and knowledge becomes more cohesive and welcoming of differences, ultimately leading to an enlightened community.

He stated that the launch of the second edition of the award marks a new phase in a cultural project focused on honoring one of Kuwait’s foremost figures in educational reform. The award serves as a platform for promoting innovation and reinforcing the value of knowledge as a cornerstone for societal advancement.

Initiatives to Foster Private Sector Involvement

Dr. Al-Issa outlined two initiatives aimed at encouraging the private sector’s role in cultural development. The first initiative involves creating a fund to support education, which would invite private companies to contribute financially. This fund would operate under established principles of governance and transparency, aiming to assist underprivileged yet talented students in completing their university studies.

The second initiative proposes the establishment of an independent institution dedicated to fostering innovation and creativity in both the natural and social sciences. This institution would focus on discovering and supporting Arab talents, potentially under the title “Kuwait Innovation Award,” recognizing outstanding inventions and achievements from the Arab world based on specific scientific criteria.

Role of the Award Beyond Recognition

The award aims to do more than merely recognize winners and provide monetary rewards. Its objectives also include facilitating the transformation of promising innovations into viable projects, fostering connections between innovators and investors, and encouraging partnerships among universities, research centers, and private sector firms.

Highlights from the First Edition

Speaking at the conference, the award’s general secretary, novelist Buthaina Al-Issa, reflected on Sheikh Yusuf Bin Issa’s lifelong dedication to reading, which reportedly averaged six hours a day for over eighty years. She noted his commitment to sharing his literary, scientific, and historical insights through booklets he distributed freely, one of which was known as “The Collectibles.”

The first edition of the award received a remarkable response, with 532 books submitted from 32 countries. The current edition saw a total of 465 submissions from 26 nations, comprising 307 entries in the literature category (novels) and 158 in the field of humanities, covering sociology, anthropology, cultural studies, and digital humanities.

Participation Overview

Submissions for this year’s award came from various countries, with Egypt leading with 197 entries, followed by Morocco with 40, Palestine with 27, and both Iraq and Algeria contributing 23 each. There were also notable submissions from Saudi Arabia, Syria, Jordan, Kuwait, and Oman, among others. Female authors represented 28% of the submissions compared to 72% from male authors, showcasing a growing participation of women in literary and cultural fields.

Looking Ahead

The Sheikh Yusuf Bin Issa Cultural Award aims to solidify Kuwait’s reputation as a hub for Arab cultural activity. Moving forward, the award’s initiatives will not only honor creativity and scholarship but also facilitate collaborative efforts in the cultural sector. Observers can anticipate fruitful discussions about the integration of private sector resources in cultural development as these initiatives unfold.
