New Educational Pathways Introduced in Secondary Education
The Ministry of Education has officially announced the implementation of a new pathways curriculum for secondary education, effective from the academic year 2026/2027. This decision, endorsed by Minister of Education Engineer Sayed Jalal Al-Tabtabai, aims to provide students with a structured and choice-driven education system during their high school years.
Under this new system, secondary education will span three years, from the 10th to the 12th grade, divided into six academic semesters. Students’ progression will depend on the courses and units they complete, allowing for individualized support when challenges arise in specific subjects.
Overview of the New Pathways Curriculum
The secondary education pathways consist of eight different tracks: Mathematics, Science, Languages, Business, Industry, Technology, Law, and Social Sciences. This diverse selection enables students to focus on areas that align with their interests and career aspirations. Students will study general courses along with specialized ones, ensuring a well-rounded educational experience.
To foster student engagement and adapt to different learning needs, the curriculum introduces a comprehensive structure. Each semester comprises nine units with a weekly workload of 35 periods, including a mandatory weekly “FLEX” session for guidance and skill development. The aim is to enhance academic performance while supporting students in developing necessary competencies.
Academic Requirements and Assessment Criteria
Graduating from this program requires students to successfully complete 54 units, with a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) requirement of 1.0. Of the total units, 48 are factored into the GPA calculation, while six units for physical education and free choice activities do not affect the academic average.
Moreover, students must complete 60 documented community service and internship hours, spread over four semesters, ensuring they gain real-world experience and contribute positively to their communities. An optional summer session allows eligible students to retake courses or accelerate their graduation timeline.
Personalized Support and Progress Tracking
Upon acceptance into the program, students undergo a foundational phase involving various subjects, including Islamic Studies, Arabic Language, English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Sciences, and Social Studies. During this phase, they will select exploratory courses that help inform their future track decisions, enhancing their understanding of different fields.
Determining a student’s track occurs after successfully completing 18 units and the foundational requirements. The selection process considers the student’s interests and performance, laying the groundwork for a supportive educational experience. Factors include cumulative GPA, course performance, and talent assessments.
Future Directions and Implementation Strategy
The Ministry of Education plans to implement this pathway system in 12 schools, with one for boys and one for girls in each educational district. This pilot initiative will undergo continuous monitoring and evaluation to ensure quality guidance, track selection, and study organization, laying the foundation for a successful rollout across more institutions.
As this new educational structure takes effect, students, parents, and educational stakeholders are encouraged to stay informed about their options and how these changes will impact academic trajectories. It’s expected that this reform will lead to a more tailored and effective learning environment, preparing students for their future careers and educational endeavors.
