Summer Road Safety: Key Risks for Families

Thousands of families are packing vehicles and crossing land borders for long-distance journeys as the summer travel season begins, and summer road safety is front of mind for authorities and drivers alike. Officials said heat, long driving hours and heavy luggage raise mechanical and human risks on highways, prompting intensified inspections and public advisories across the emirate.

Ras Al Khaimah Police launched a “Summer Without Accidents” campaign to reduce collisions during the peak season, traffic authorities said. The operation focuses on technical vehicle checks, load enforcement at border crossings, and awareness about driver readiness before departure.

Tire Inspection and Heat-Related Mechanical Stress

Tires are the critical interface between vehicle and road, and officials warned that high temperatures amplify existing wear and can precipitate blowouts. Traffic engineers and police urged drivers to conduct a thorough tire inspection before long trips, checking tread depth, sidewall condition, and correct inflation according to the vehicle manufacturer and load.

Lieutenant Colonel Ahmed Al Kaizi, Head of the Vehicle Section at Ras Al Khaimah Police, noted that each tire has a design load and that exceeding it increases the likelihood of failure. He added that tire age should be monitored: even if a tire looks new, poor storage or harsh road use can reduce its effective lifespan below the typical five-year guideline, officials said.

Vehicle Load Limits and Stability

Overloading vehicles affects handling, braking performance and tire longevity, creating hazards for occupants and other road users. Traffic authorities apply strict checks of vehicle load limits at ports and overland crossings to ensure luggage and rooftop carriers do not impair visibility or upset the vehicle’s center of gravity.

Officials emphasized that adherence to vehicle load limits reduces stress on brakes and suspension and keeps the vehicle within tested safety margins. Drivers should evenly distribute cargo, secure loose items, and avoid exceeding the gross vehicle weight rating listed in the owner’s manual, police said.

Driver Readiness and Managing Fatigue

Human factors are a leading cause of incidents during extended summer drives. Specialists said driver fatigue, distraction and inadequate physical readiness can turn a minor fault into a serious crash. Authorities recommend that drivers assess their own alertness and avoid starting long legs of the journey if they feel drowsy or unwell.

Major Abdulrahman Al Sroumi, Head of the Inspection Division, said that rest stops are located along major routes for a reason: a short break restores concentration and reduces risk. He discouraged reliance on stimulants or caffeine as a substitute for sleep and urged families to plan realistic driving schedules with regular pauses.

Pre-Trip Checks: A Practical Checklist

Traffic safety specialists and police outlined a concise pre-trip checklist drivers can use before setting off. Furthermore, they stressed that these steps are preventive measures, not optional extras, and can be decisive in avoiding roadside breakdowns or accidents in remote or hot areas.

Recommended checks include: tire inspection and proper inflation, brake system inspection, coolant and engine oil levels, air-conditioning performance, battery condition, lights and indicators, and availability of a functional spare tire and change tools. Additionally, carry a fire extinguisher, a first-aid kit and emergency contact numbers, officials advised.

Enforcement, Public Campaigns and Technical Inspections

Ras Al Khaimah Police said the campaign combines field patrols, fixed inspection centers and spot checks at border terminals to ensure compliance with safety standards. The authority explained that technical inspections assess chassis integrity, emissions and other systems that deteriorate under heat and heavy use.

Colonel Saqr bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Director of Vehicle and Driver Licensing, described the comprehensive inspection as the “first line of defense” that allows defects to be fixed before they escalate into emergencies. He added that discovering and addressing faults in advance is safer and often less costly than dealing with a vehicle failure during a long trip.

Public Advice and Secondary Precautions

In addition to mechanical checks, officials urged drivers to set realistic itineraries, obey posted speed limits and maintain safe following distances. Avoiding distractions such as mobile phones and route changes while driving reduces the chance of sudden maneuvers that overloaded or heat-stressed vehicles cannot handle.

Authorities also recommended matching tyre type to travel conditions; for example, selecting tires rated for the vehicle weight and the expected road surfaces. Awareness of “tire inspection”, “vehicle load limits” and “driver fatigue” as interrelated components of safety helps families plan safer trips, specialists said.

Conclusion and What to Watch Next

As holiday travel continues, motorists should expect intensified inspections and public messaging from traffic authorities through the summer months. Officials said drivers should monitor advisories from police and transport departments and allow time for any required maintenance before departing.

Looking ahead, authorities will expand inspection points along main corridors and refine guidance based on field findings; travelers should watch for updated checkpoints and seasonal safety alerts. Taking preventive steps now will improve summer road safety and help ensure that long family journeys end as happy memories rather than avoidable tragedies.
