Etihad Airways is experiencing significant disruptions to its flight schedule, particularly impacting travel between the United Arab Emirates and Pakistan. Numerous flight cancellations and delays are currently in effect due to severe weather conditions in Pakistan, affecting thousands of passengers. The airline is advising travelers to proactively check their flight status and prepare for potential further disruptions.

The disruptions began on May 15, 2024, and are primarily affecting flights to and from major Pakistani cities including Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad. Etihad has not specified the exact number of flights impacted, but reports indicate a substantial number of passengers are stranded or facing altered travel plans. The situation is evolving, and the airline is closely monitoring weather patterns to assess when normal operations can resume.

Understanding the Etihad Flight Cancellations

The primary cause of the flight cancellations is exceptionally heavy rainfall and associated flooding across large parts of Pakistan. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, the monsoon season has arrived earlier than usual and is bringing unprecedented levels of precipitation. This has led to airport closures and significant challenges for air traffic control.

Impact on Passengers

Passengers are facing considerable inconvenience, including missed connections, delayed arrivals, and the need to rebook flights. Etihad is offering assistance to affected travelers, but demand for alternative arrangements is high. The airline acknowledged the disruption and apologized for the inconvenience caused.

Affected Routes and Destinations

While all flights to Pakistan are experiencing some level of disruption, routes to Karachi and Lahore appear to be the most severely affected. Flights connecting through these cities to other destinations are also experiencing delays. Passengers traveling to other South Asian destinations may also experience knock-on effects due to the regional impact of the weather system.

However, the disruptions aren’t limited to Pakistan. Flights originating or terminating in the UAE are also experiencing delays as Etihad works to manage the flow of passengers and aircraft. This is particularly noticeable at Abu Dhabi International Airport, Etihad’s main hub.

Meanwhile, other airlines operating flights to Pakistan, such as Emirates and Qatar Airways, are also reporting delays and cancellations. This suggests the issue is widespread and not specific to Etihad’s operations. Travel experts recommend that passengers check with their respective airlines for the latest updates.

What Passengers Should Do

Etihad has advised all affected travellers to ensure their contact details are up to date by visiting etihad.com/contactme, so they can receive real-time updates via SMS or email. This is crucial for receiving timely notifications about flight changes.

Passengers who need to change their bookings or have questions can contact Etihad through its local phone numbers, live chat or social media channels. The airline has increased staffing levels to handle the surge in inquiries. It is important to note that wait times may be longer than usual.

The airline said the safety and comfort of its passengers and crew remain its “number one priority” and apologised for the inconvenience caused by the flight delays and cancellations. Travellers flying between the UAE and Pakistan are advised to check their flight status before heading to the airport and allow extra time for their journeys as weather-related disruptions may continue.

Additionally, passengers with connecting flights should confirm the status of all legs of their journey. Etihad is offering flexibility in rebooking policies, but it is advisable to proactively manage changes to avoid further complications. Understanding your passenger rights regarding delays and cancellations is also recommended.

In contrast to typical operational disruptions, this situation is largely outside of the airline’s control. Severe weather events are becoming increasingly common, highlighting the vulnerability of air travel to climate-related factors. This incident underscores the importance of travel insurance that covers disruptions caused by unforeseen circumstances.

The situation remains fluid, and Etihad has not yet announced a definitive timeline for resuming normal operations. The airline is expected to issue further updates as the weather conditions in Pakistan improve. Passengers are advised to continue monitoring the situation closely and to check Etihad’s website or social media channels for the latest information regarding travel disruptions. The next 24-48 hours will be critical in determining the extent of the ongoing impact and the potential for further cancellations.
