Sharjah, UAE – A new exhibition dedicated to the life and work of Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish opened at the House of Wisdom on December 4, 2025, and will run through March 13, 2026. “The Dice Player: Mahmoud Darwish” offers an immersive exploration of the poet’s journey, from his childhood to his enduring legacy, aiming to connect visitors with one of the Arab world’s most influential literary figures. The exhibition is expected to draw significant interest from both regional and international audiences.

Celebrating the Poetry of Mahmoud Darwish

Mahmoud Darwish (1941-2008) is widely considered one of the most important poets of the 20th century, and a key voice in Palestinian national identity. His work, often characterized by themes of exile, longing, and resistance, resonated deeply with Arabs and continues to be studied and celebrated globally. The exhibition at the House of Wisdom seeks to contextualize his poetry within the broader scope of his life experiences.

A Six-Part Narrative

The exhibition is structured around six distinct chapters, each designed to illuminate a different facet of Darwish’s life. “The Son” focuses on his early years in the village of Al-Birwa, before its destruction during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, and the formative impact of displacement. “The Poet” delves into the development of his literary voice, showcasing early manuscripts and influences.

The narrative then shifts to “The Exiled,” exploring Darwish’s years spent in Lebanon and other locations outside Palestine, and the emotional toll of living in diaspora. This section highlights how his experiences shaped his perspective and fueled his poetic expression. “The Lover” offers a more intimate look at the poet, examining the role of romance and personal relationships in his work, acknowledging the often tragic nature of these connections.

Darwish’s political activism is central to “The Activist,” which demonstrates how his poetry became a powerful tool for resistance and a reflection of the Palestinian struggle. The final section, “The Absent Presence,” underscores the enduring impact of his work, even after his death, and its continued relevance in contemporary discussions of identity and belonging. The exhibition uses a variety of media, including photographs, letters, and spatial installations, to create an immersive experience.

Immersive Design and Cultural Significance

Visitors to “The Dice Player” can expect a multi-sensory experience designed to evoke the atmosphere of Darwish’s life and work. The exhibition incorporates elements of sound, light, and visual art to create a space for reflection and emotional connection. According to the House of Wisdom, the goal is to move beyond simply displaying artifacts and instead offer a deeply felt encounter with the poet’s inner world.

The exhibition’s opening coincides with a renewed interest in Arabic literature and poetry within the UAE and the wider Gulf region. This growing appreciation is fueled by initiatives like the Sheikh Zayed Book Award and increased investment in cultural institutions. The House of Wisdom, a modern library and cultural center, is positioned as a key hub for these activities, promoting intellectual exchange and artistic expression.

The choice of Darwish as the subject of this major exhibition reflects his iconic status and the universal themes explored in his poetry. While deeply rooted in the Palestinian experience, his work transcends national boundaries, addressing issues of love, loss, and the search for identity that resonate with audiences worldwide. The exhibition also aims to introduce Darwish’s work to a new generation of readers and art enthusiasts.

The event is anticipated to boost cultural tourism in Sharjah, attracting visitors interested in literature and the arts. The House of Wisdom has partnered with local schools and universities to offer guided tours and educational programs related to the exhibition, further expanding its reach. The exhibition’s organizers hope to foster a deeper understanding of Darwish’s contribution to Arabic poetry and the broader literary landscape.

Looking ahead, the House of Wisdom plans to host a series of lectures, workshops, and performances inspired by Darwish’s work throughout the exhibition’s run. The success of “The Dice Player” will likely influence future programming decisions, potentially leading to similar exhibitions focused on other prominent Arab intellectuals and artists. Further analysis will be needed to assess the exhibition’s long-term impact on public engagement with Palestinian culture and Darwish’s enduring legacy.
