The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) in Qatar is progressing with the first phase of extensive road infrastructure improvements in the Duhail South and Umm Lekhba areas. This project aims to enhance connectivity and services for a rapidly growing residential population. Work currently focuses on drainage network installation, with completion expected to benefit approximately 864 residential plots.
The ongoing development, located east of Al Shamal Road and west of Arab League Street, is a key component of Qatar’s broader infrastructure development plans leading up to and beyond major international events. According to Ashghal officials, the project is designed to alleviate traffic congestion and improve overall quality of life for residents in these expanding suburban communities.
Duhail South and Umm Lekhba Road Infrastructure Project Details
The first package of the Remaining Roads and Infrastructure Works encompasses a significant scope of work. Ashghal plans to construct approximately 22 kilometers of new roadways, alongside upgrades to existing local road networks. This will be accompanied by the installation of 936 new light poles to improve visibility and safety.
Enhanced Utilities and Amenities
Beyond roadways and lighting, the project includes substantial improvements to essential utility networks. A 19-kilometer sewage network is under construction, alongside 21 kilometers of stormwater, surface water, and groundwater drainage systems. Additionally, an 11-kilometer treated water network will be implemented to support irrigation and other non-potable water needs. The project also allocates space for 3,233 parking spaces and incorporates landscaping for aesthetic improvements.
Currently, excavation work is underway to prepare for the installation of stormwater drainage pipes. Ashghal is employing a phased approach, dividing the project into five stages to minimize disruption to residents and manage construction efficiently. Each stage focuses on a specific geographical area within the overall project footprint.
Supporting Local Industry
Ashghal is prioritizing the use of locally sourced materials and manufacturers for this infrastructure development. The authority aims to achieve a 70% local component in the total materials used, including lighting fixtures, signage, drainage pipes, asphalt, precast concrete, and reinforcing steel. This commitment aligns with Ashghal’s “Taheel” initiative, launched in 2017, designed to bolster the domestic manufacturing sector and promote economic diversification. This focus on local content is expected to stimulate growth within Qatar’s construction supply chain.
However, supply chain challenges and potential material cost fluctuations remain factors that could influence project timelines and budgets. Additionally, coordinating construction activities with existing utilities and minimizing traffic disruptions are ongoing considerations for the project team. The project also contributes to Qatar’s broader urban planning goals, aiming to create more sustainable and livable communities.
The project’s location, bordered by major thoroughfares like Al Shamal Road and Al Duhail Street, necessitates careful traffic management during construction. Ashghal is implementing detours and signage to guide motorists and minimize congestion. The improved road network is anticipated to significantly reduce commute times and enhance accessibility to key destinations in Doha.
