Oman enjoyed a vibrant resurgence in tourism activity over the recent four-day National Day weekend, as both residents and visitors capitalized on the extended break. From November 26th to 29th, the Sultanate experienced a significant boost in occupancy rates for hotels in Oman, a surge in demand for domestic travel packages, and a welcome increase in business for the hospitality sector. This positive trend highlights Oman’s growing appeal as a destination for leisure and adventure.

National Day Weekend Drives Tourism Boom in Oman

The decision to declare Wednesday, November 26th, and Thursday, November 27th, as official holidays sparked a wave of travel planning. Many Omanis opted to explore their own country, choosing staycations within Muscat or venturing out on short domestic getaways. This focus on internal tourism provided a substantial economic benefit to businesses across the Sultanate. This surge in domestic tourism proved exceptionally beneficial for the local economy, demonstrating a willingness among residents to support hospitality and leisure services within Oman.

High Occupancy Rates Across the Country

Hotels and resorts throughout Oman reported a considerable increase in bookings. Numerous properties were fully occupied throughout the weekend, demonstrating the high demand for accommodation. Jagdeep Thakral, General Manager of dusitD2 Naseem Resort Jabal Akhdar, confirmed this, stating his resort witnessed an “extraordinary surge in visitors.”

“We had an exceptional weekend. From Wednesday to Saturday we saw an uplift, with Thursday and Friday being packed. We witnessed a 100 per cent surge compared to our regular weekends this time,” he explained to Times of Oman. The dusitD2 Naseem Resort, operated by Dusit International, is particularly well-known for its location in Jabal Akhdar and its proximity to one of Oman’s more exciting adventure parks, making it a popular choice for thrill-seekers and those looking to experience Oman’s natural beauty.

A Culinary Revival in Muscat

The positive impact wasn’t limited to accommodation. Restaurants, especially those in the capital city of Muscat, also benefited from the increased foot traffic. Aizat Duishekeeva, Head of Jungle Restaurant Complex and Bahja Hall in Qurum, noted the significant success driven by a revamped menu.

“The Jungle Restaurant has been around, but our menu hasn’t,” Duishekeeva said. “We have introduced a brand-new menu that takes guests on a culinary journey from the tops of the mountains to the bottom of the seas, with delicious, crisp and fresh recipes.” This demonstrates a proactive approach by businesses to enhance the visitor experience and attract both locals and tourists. The revamp undoubtedly helped capitalize on the increased demand during the long weekend.

Luxury Experiences and Desert Escapes

Many hotels in Oman went beyond standard accommodation, offering curated overnight desert packages. These packages provided travelers with the opportunity to experience the stunning Omani landscapes in comfort and style, often including activities like dune bashing, camel riding, and stargazing. The popularity of these packages highlights the desire for unique and immersive experiences.

This trend aligns with Oman’s broader strategy to promote its diverse tourism offerings, moving beyond traditional beach holidays to encompass adventure, culture, and eco-tourism.

Short-Haul International Travel Also Popular

While domestic tourism saw a substantial uplift, some residents preferred to travel abroad during the extended break. Travel agencies reported a high demand for short-haul holiday packages. Dubai remained a consistently popular destination, followed by the emerging hotspots of Azerbaijan and Georgia. The convenience and relative affordability of these destinations likely contributed to their appeal.

These destinations offer a diverse range of experiences, from the bustling city life of Dubai to the cultural richness of Azerbaijan and the mountainous beauty of Georgia, catering to a variety of travel preferences. The demand for these trips also underscores the purchasing power and travel aspirations of Oman’s residents.

Looking Ahead: Sustaining the Momentum for Hotels in Oman

The four-day National Day weekend provided a much-needed boost to Oman’s tourism sector. The strong performance of hotels in Oman, restaurants, and travel agencies indicates a healthy appetite for travel, both domestically and internationally. It is crucial for Oman to build on this momentum, continuing to invest in its tourism infrastructure and promote its unique offerings.

The success of initiatives like the revamped menu at Jungle Restaurant and the curated desert packages demonstrates the importance of providing innovative and high-quality experiences. Additionally, sustained marketing efforts highlighting Oman’s cultural heritage, natural beauty, and adventure opportunities will be essential to attracting a broader range of tourists.
