UAE residents are finding increasingly affordable travel options for the upcoming winter season, with destinations like Sri Lanka and Thailand gaining significant traction. Travel agencies are reporting a surge in bookings for these locations alongside more traditional choices like the Maldives, driven by competitive pricing and extended school holidays. Demand is also rising for cruises departing from Dubai, offering another route to winter sunshine without breaking the bank.

Winter Sun: Affordable Travel Destinations for UAE Residents

According to Expedia, demand for travel to Krabi, Thailand has soared by 135 percent, with Phuket and Bangkok also experiencing substantial increases. These Southeast Asian nations present a compelling alternative to more expensive destinations, boasting beautiful beaches, rich culture, and relatively easy visa processes for UAE citizens. A three-night stay at the 5-star Sofitel Krabi Phokeethra Golf & Spa Resort, including flights and breakfast, is currently available for around Dh3,800.

Sri Lanka is also emerging as a popular, budget-friendly choice. A comparable three-night package at the 4-star Avani Kalutara Resort, offering a Superior Courtyard View Room and daily breakfast with return flights, starts from Dh3,199 per person. This positions Sri Lanka as a strong contender for travellers prioritizing value without sacrificing comfort.

The Allure of Cruises

Beyond traditional fly-and-stay vacations, winter cruises are witnessing a growth in popularity. A seven-night full board cruise on the MSC Euribia, departing from Dubai on November 29th, provides an itinerary including calls at Doha, Abu Dhabi, and Sir Bani Yas Island before returning to Dubai. Pricing for this option begins at approximately Dh3,500 per person, offering a convenient way to experience multiple destinations.

The cruise industry has been actively working to attract regional travellers, and the increased offerings from Dubai cater to the demand for shorter, accessible voyages. This growth reflects a broader trend in the travel sector towards all-inclusive packages that simplify planning and budgeting.

Despite the rising interest in affordable alternatives, the Maldives continues to be a top choice for UAE travellers seeking a winter escape. However, entry points are higher, with prices starting around Dh6,635 per person for a deluxe bungalow at Kurumba Maldives, including all-inclusive meals and return speedboat transfers.

The Maldives’ appeal lies in its exclusivity and the promise of a secluded island experience. While traditionally expensive, the report indicates travellers are now finding savings of up to 50 percent, making a Maldives vacation more attainable for a wider range of budgets. This suggests resorts are implementing strategies to fill rooms during the peak winter season.

The lengthening of school holidays in December is having a marked effect on travel booking patterns. Many UAE residents are choosing to extend their breaks, sometimes combining more affordable destinations with shorter stays in luxury resorts. This “bleisure” approach – blending business and leisure, or in this case, budget and luxury – appears to be on the rise.

Travel agencies, like dnata Travel, are responding by offering a wider range of winter packages designed to appeal to different budgets and preferences. They are actively promoting the diversity of available options, encouraging travellers to explore combinations of destinations to maximize their vacation experience. The emphasis is on personalized travel planning to cater to these evolving needs.

Several factors are contributing to this increased affordability. Greater airline capacity, competitive hotel pricing, and promotional offers from tourism boards are all playing a role. Fluctuations in currency exchange rates can also impact the overall cost of travel, particularly for destinations like Sri Lanka and Thailand.

Looking ahead, travel experts anticipate continued strong demand for winter sun destinations from the UAE. The specific mix of popular locations will likely depend on ongoing economic conditions and geopolitical factors. Monitoring potential changes in visa regulations or airline policies could also influence travel trends in the coming months.
