Doha, Qatar – The German Embassy in Doha commemorated the Day of German Unity on Monday, reaffirming the historical significance of the event and highlighting the robust and growing relationship between Germany and Qatar. The event, attended by prominent Qatari officials and international dignitaries, underscored the importance of peaceful conflict resolution and strengthened bilateral ties.

The celebration, held in Doha, featured a speech by German Ambassador to Qatar, H.E. Oliver Owcza, and was attended by Qatar’s Minister of Public Health, H.E. Mansoor bin Ebrahim bin Saad Al Mahmoud, and H.E. Ibrahim Yousif Abdullah Fakhro, Director of the Protocol Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, among others.

Celebrating 35 Years of German Unity and Bilateral Relations

The Day of German Unity marks the anniversary of the reunification of East and West Germany on October 3, 1990, following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Ambassador Owcza emphasized that this date resonates deeply for Germans and their allies worldwide, symbolizing a peaceful transition and the triumph of democratic values. He recalled the profound emotional impact of the Wall’s collapse, acknowledging the courage of East German citizens and the support of international partners.

According to the Ambassador, the lessons of German reunification continue to shape its foreign policy, particularly its commitment to peaceful conflict resolution, a rules-based international order, and free trade. He specifically praised Qatar’s alignment with these principles and its increasing role as a mediator in regional disputes, describing Doha’s approach as a “remarkable embodiment of soft power.”

Strengthening Ties Through Diplomacy and Trade

The Ambassador highlighted a year of positive developments in Qatar-Germany relations. Two visits to Doha by German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul and the recent launch of a bilateral strategic dialogue demonstrate increased political engagement. Economically, Germany has solidified its position as Qatar’s sixth-largest trade partner, with ongoing efforts to expand commercial partnerships.

Additionally, Qatar and Germany are collaborating on crucial issues like climate change, continuing the “Doha Climate Talks” as a forum for discussing environmental challenges. This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to sustainable development and global environmental stewardship.

Ambassador Owcza also took a moment to acknowledge the German expatriate community in Qatar, expressing gratitude for their contributions to Qatar’s development in fields ranging from engineering and education to medicine and the arts. He emphasized the positive image of “Made in Germany” that these professionals help to maintain.

However, the Ambassador also addressed a serious matter, reiterating Germany’s condemnation of earlier attacks on Qatari soil, deeming them “completely unacceptable.” This sentiment underscores Germany’s commitment to Qatar’s security and stability.

The German Embassy’s celebration of the Day of German Unity wasn’t just a historical reflection, but a testament to the present strength of Qatar-German relations. The event also served to reinforce shared values and acknowledge future collaboration opportunities.

Looking ahead, discussions are expected to continue within the framework of the bilateral strategic dialogue, potentially leading to further agreements in areas such as energy, education, and security. The ongoing Doha Climate Talks will also be a key area to watch, as both nations seek to advance sustainable solutions to global environmental concerns. While progress will undoubtedly be subject to geopolitical factors, the current trajectory suggests a continued strengthening of the partnership between Qatar and Germany.
