Former Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant announced his resignation from the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, following disagreements with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the war in Gaza. Gallant, who maintained his seat in parliament after being removed from his ministerial position, cited the government’s decision to uphold exemptions from military service for ultra-Orthodox men as a primary reason for his resignation. The ongoing war in Gaza had led to widespread resentment among the Israeli public, as tens of thousands of men were forced into months of military duty.

Gallant and Netanyahu had clashed over the handling of the war in Gaza, with Gallant advocating for diplomatic efforts to free Israeli hostages held by Hamas, while Netanyahu insisted on maintaining military pressure on the group. Netanyahu’s dismissal of Gallant due to “significant gaps” and a “crisis of trust” led to protests across Israel. He replaced Gallant with Israel Katz, a longtime loyalist who had previously served as both the defence and foreign minister.

Despite his resignation from the Knesset, Gallant stated that he would remain a member of the Likud Party and continue to uphold its ideological principles. Both Gallant and Netanyahu were issued arrest warrants by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in connection with the Gaza conflict. The war, which has claimed the lives of over 45,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, has continued despite calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities by the UN Security Council.

In addition to Gallant’s resignation, Israel is also facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions in Gaza. The conflict has brought international scrutiny to Israel’s military tactics and handling of the situation in Gaza. Despite the challenges faced by Israel on the international stage, Gallant remains committed to the national path of the Likud movement and will continue to support its ideals.

The resignation of former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant from the Knesset comes at a critical time for Israel as it faces mounting pressure and legal challenges over its handling of the war in Gaza. The ongoing conflict has not only strained relations between Israel and Palestine but has also led to internal disagreements within the Israeli government. Gallant’s decision to step down highlights the growing divide between key political figures in Israel and the challenges they face in addressing the complex issues surrounding the conflict.

The conflict in Gaza has put a spotlight on Israel’s military actions and has raised concerns about possible violations of international law. The arrest warrants issued against Gallant and Netanyahu by the International Criminal Court underscore the seriousness of the situation and the need for accountability. As Israel continues to face legal challenges and international scrutiny, the resignation of Gallant serves as a reminder of the difficult decisions that political leaders must make in times of crisis. Despite the challenges ahead, Gallant’s commitment to upholding the principles of the Likud Party demonstrates his dedication to Israel’s national path and the ideals of the movement.
