Food Safety and Quality Centre conducts 256 field visits in the first half of 2024

The Food Safety and Quality Centre in Muscat has been actively working towards ensuring the safety and quality of food products in the region. In the first half of 2024, the centre completed 256 field visits to various food establishments, including agricultural, animal, and fishery establishments. These visits were conducted to ensure that the establishments were adhering to health standards and approved specifications. The Director-General of the centre, Dr. Hussein bin Simah Al Masrouri, highlighted the ministry’s commitment to food safety and quality, emphasizing the importance of developing an integrated system that focuses on scientific aspects and risk management. The ministry’s efforts include implementing measures and regulations governing the production, import, export, trade, and consumption of food products, as well as monitoring products in local markets.

During the first ten months of 2024, the Food Safety and Quality Centre dealt with 90 reports and warnings, leading to the issuance of 11 local food notices, 3 recalls, and 1 advisory. These actions demonstrate the centre’s commitment to promptly and effectively responding to food safety issues. Additionally, the centre released 26,584 imported food shipments, issued over 15,138 validity certificates, 2,319 health certificates, and 552 export certificates in the first half of 2024. These efforts have contributed to enhancing foreign trade of food products and ensuring consumer confidence in the safety and quality of available food items. The centre also matched 451 explanatory data cards and 1,396 test reports, further showcasing the ministry’s dedication towards meeting food safety and quality requirements.

The Food Safety and Quality Centre’s focus on enhancing inspection and oversight of food establishments is crucial in maintaining high health standards and ensuring compliance with approved specifications. By conducting field visits to a wide range of establishments, including fish powder and oil factories, warehouses, fishing vessels, trading locations, and marketing outlets, the centre aims to verify that these establishments are following the necessary standards. The ministry’s efforts in regulating food production, import, export, trade, and consumption, as well as monitoring products in local markets, play a significant role in safeguarding the health and well-being of consumers. These measures are designed to promote transparency and accountability in the food industry, ultimately leading to a safer and more reliable food supply chain.

In line with its commitment to food safety and quality, the Food Safety and Quality Centre has been actively working towards improving the inspection and oversight of food establishments in Muscat. The ministry’s focus on scientific aspects and risk management demonstrates a proactive approach to addressing potential food safety issues. By implementing measures and regulations governing the production, import, export, trade, and consumption of food products, the ministry is ensuring that consumers have access to safe and high-quality food items. The centre’s handling of reports and warnings, as well as the issuance of local food notices, recalls, and advisories, further underscore its dedication to promptly addressing food safety issues and ensuring compliance with health standards.
