The second edition of the Souq Waqif Truffle Exhibition and Auction has begun, offering a rare culinary delicacy for food enthusiasts and traders in Qatar. The exhibition features white and brown truffles from Algeria and Saudi Arabia, known locally as Fagga. The event, in partnership with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the Ministry of Municipality, will run for at least four months, with adjusted operating hours during Ramadan.

Auction Manager Jamal Ibrahim Al Ishaq shared that 150 boxes of truffles from Saudi Arabia and Algeria arrived for the launch, with more supplies expected in the coming weeks from Iraq, Syria, and Iran. Due to limited rainfall in recent months, Qatari truffle production is expected to be low this season. Truffles, a highly sought-after underground fungus, are known for their distinctive taste and rarity. Prices for truffles vary by type, size, and delivery volume, with white truffles priced between QR600 and QR1,200 per kilogram and brown truffles starting at QR150 per kilogram.

Al Ishaq anticipates a price drop as supply increases, with larger truffles expected to arrive in the coming months. To ensure quality, a representative from the Ministry of Municipality inspects the truffles daily, ensuring they are safe for consumption and free from insects or damage. Truffles, an essential part of Gulf cuisine, hold cultural and historical significance in the region, being used for both culinary and medicinal purposes for centuries. In Qatar, truffles are incorporated into traditional dishes like Majboos.

The exhibition will be open daily from 8am to 12pm, or until stocks of truffles run out. Residents and traders showed keen interest in the auction on the opening day, bidding for boxes of truffles from Algeria and Saudi Arabia. Al Ishaq expects an additional 500 to 600 boxes of truffles, primarily from Iraq, to be available in the next two weeks. The event provides a unique opportunity for local food enthusiasts and traders to acquire these rare and sought-after culinary delicacies in Qatar.

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the Ministry of Municipality are dedicated partners in organizing the Souq Waqif Truffle Exhibition and Auction, ensuring that the event meets high standards of quality and safety. With the increasing supply of truffles expected in the coming months, prices are anticipated to drop, allowing more individuals to enjoy this unique culinary experience. Truffles, a delicacy with a rich history and cultural significance in the Gulf region, continue to be a popular ingredient in traditional Qatari dishes.

The Souq Waqif Truffle Exhibition and Auction provides a platform for residents and traders to access and bid on these rare culinary treasures, enhancing the culinary landscape in Qatar. As the event continues for the next few months, more truffles from different countries are expected to arrive, offering a diverse range of options for local food enthusiasts. The high demand for truffles and the anticipation of a price drop as supply increases make this event a must-visit destination for anyone interested in experiencing the unique flavors of these prized fungi in Qatar.
