Former European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso recently spoke with Euronews in an exclusive interview, discussing a range of topics including Putin, Trump, Crimea, and the importance of maintaining EU treaties. Barroso emphasized that Crimea has always been a “special case” and expressed confidence in the EU’s ability to handle any potential fallout from US president-elect Donald Trump withdrawing the US from Ukraine. During his tenure, Barroso oversaw the accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the EU, as well as the illegal annexation of Crimea by Russia.

In the interview with Euronews’ Shona Murray, Barroso highlighted the need to address political issues without resorting to changes in EU treaties. Despite concerns about the erosion of rule of law in Europe, Barroso cautioned against using institutional tools to solve political problems. He also shared an anecdote about a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, in which Putin allegedly characterized Ukraine as an “artificial country” created by the CIA and the European Commission. Barroso’s insights shed light on his experiences navigating complex geopolitical challenges during his time in office.

Barroso, who served as European Commission president from 2004 to 2014, reflected on his interactions with Putin throughout his tenure. These insights provide valuable perspective on the relationship between the EU and Russia during a tumultuous period marked by the annexation of Crimea and other geopolitical tensions. Barroso’s experiences offer a unique glimpse into the intricacies of international diplomacy and the complex dynamics that shape global politics.

The conversation with Barroso also touched on recent developments in the European Parliament, including a vote on the deforestation law. The outcome of this vote could have far-reaching implications for EU environmental policy and efforts to combat climate change. As lawmakers consider potential changes to the legislation, including adjustments to implementation deadlines and content, the debate highlights the ongoing challenges of balancing environmental concerns with economic considerations within the EU.

Radio Schuman, the platform featuring the interview with Barroso, is hosted and produced by a team of journalists and production assistants, showcasing a diverse array of perspectives on European politics and current events. By providing a platform for in-depth discussions and analysis, Radio Schuman offers valuable insights into the complexities of EU governance and the broader geopolitical landscape. The show’s focus on issues ranging from environmental policy to international diplomacy underscores the importance of informed dialogue in addressing key challenges facing the EU and the wider world.

Overall, the interview with Barroso offers a compelling glimpse into the experiences and perspectives of a former European Commission president who navigated the complexities of EU governance during a transformative period in European history. As the EU continues to face a range of challenges, from geopolitical tensions to environmental concerns, Barroso’s insights serve as a valuable resource for understanding the intricacies of international politics and the delicate balance of power within the EU. By emphasizing the importance of maintaining institutional stability and addressing political issues through diplomatic channels, Barroso’s perspective offers a nuanced understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing the EU in the years ahead.
