President Erdogan of Turkey met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Istanbul to discuss the escalating conflict in the Middle East and potential defence industry cooperation. The two leaders also talked about the situation regarding migration and refugees. Chancellor Scholz expressed Germany’s support for Turkey in dealing with the consequences of the war in Syria, and emphasized the importance of progress between Turkey and the EU.

Over the years, Turkey has taken in millions of refugees who fled the civil war in Syria. By 2023, there were 3.2 million registered Syrian refugees in Turkey, with many more unregistered. However, Erdogan’s government has recently deported over 50,000 Syrian refugees back to Syria due to domestic tensions and economic impacts. Additionally, more than 600,000 refugees have returned to Syria “voluntarily” according to the government. Despite these challenges, Erdogan stated that Turkey’s doors remain open to refugees from Lebanon following Israel’s air and ground offensive in the region.

During the meeting, the topic of defence industry cooperation was also brought up, with talks of a potential deal to supply Turkey with Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets. Both Turkey and Germany are members of NATO, making this potential deal significant for both countries. The discussions highlighted the importance of cooperation between the two nations in terms of defence and security.

Refugee crisis remains a significant issue for Turkey, especially given the influx of Syrian refugees in recent years. Erdogan’s government has been working to manage the situation, including deporting some refugees back to Syria. Despite these challenges, Turkey has continued to provide support and assistance to refugees, including those fleeing from conflicts in Lebanon and elsewhere in the region.

As tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate, the need for international cooperation and support for countries like Turkey hosting refugees remains crucial. Erdogan and Scholz’s meeting in Istanbul reflects the ongoing efforts to address these challenges and work towards solutions, including potential defence industry cooperation. The importance of collaboration and support from the EU and other nations in addressing the refugee crisis and other issues in the region was emphasized during the discussions between the two leaders.

In conclusion, the meeting between President Erdogan and Chancellor Scholz in Istanbul focused on a range of important issues, including the situation regarding refugees, defence industry cooperation, and the escalating conflict in the Middle East. Turkey’s ongoing efforts to manage the refugee crisis, as well as its openness to receiving refugees from Lebanon, were key topics of discussion. The potential deal to supply Turkey with fighter jets also highlighted the importance of cooperation between Turkey and Germany. Overall, the meeting underscored the need for international support and collaboration in addressing the challenges faced by Turkey and other countries in the region.
