Tejarah Talks session titled ‘Agrifood: Cultivating Opportunity’ will take place on 24th September 2024 at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre in Muscat. The event will address the challenges and opportunities in the agrifood sector, including rising global demand, climate change, and the need for sustainable practices. With over 800 million people globally undernourished, food production systems are facing increasing vulnerability to environmental changes. The upcoming session will cover how digital technology is being utilized to enhance agricultural processes and boost productivity in order to improve Oman’s food security in the long term.

The latest OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook predicts a significant increase in global food demand in the next decade, underscoring the urgency for innovation and adaptation within the agricultural industry. Experts at the Tejarah Talks event will also touch upon topics such as the resilience of food supply chains, climate-smart farming strategies, shifting consumer preferences, and the importance of public-private partnerships in promoting sustainable agrifood initiatives. Maymuna Al Adawi from the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion emphasized the need to attract young Omanis to the agrifood sector in order to ensure future food security and economic growth.

The average age of farmers globally is over 60, highlighting the challenges faced in attracting younger generations to pursue careers in agriculture. The panel at the Tejarah Talks session will discuss modern, technology-driven opportunities in agriculture that offer rewarding careers and promote innovation. Moderated by Jamal Al Asmi, the discussion will feature industry experts such as Dr. Masoud Al Azri from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries Wealth and Water Resources, Sayyid Fahar Al Said from YUZU Agriculture, and Moza Al Kharusi from the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation.

Supported by Jindal Shadeed, Nortal, Apex Transgulf Manufacturing, MHD, and Oman FM, the Tejarah Talks event aims to bring together leaders, policymakers, and innovators to explore the future of Oman’s agrifood sector and potential opportunities for collaboration. It is crucial to engage youth in the agricultural industry to drive sustainable economic growth and ensure food security for the country. The integration of technology in agriculture will play a key role in advancing the sector and meeting the evolving demands of the global food market.
