Sharjah’s Ruler has given the green light to the construction of a new ‘Sports City’ in the emirate. The city will feature four sports complexes dedicated to both team and individual sports and will be located at a site selected by Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi. The announcement was made by Ali bin Shaheen Al Suwaidi, the Head of The Sharjah Department of Public Works, during a phone interview on Sharjah Radio and Television’s ‘Direct Line’ programme. The Ruler personally sketched the design for the city, which includes a central square intersected by four main roads leading to the city.

The ‘Sports City Stadium’ will be at the heart of this new development and is considered the first phase of the Sports City project. The stadium has been designed as an architectural icon, inspired by the image of a bird soaring over sand dunes. The structure consists of a platform and grandstand resembling sand dunes, with a large cover shaped like a bird with changing colors depending on the time of day. The design is environmentally conscious, reflecting the characteristics of an athlete similar to those of a falcon.

The stadium has been designed to meet all the requirements for hosting local, regional, and global events and tournaments. Al Suwaidi mentioned that they will immediately proceed with completing the detailed designs for the Sports City Stadium and commence its construction according to the directives of Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi. The aim is to ensure that the stadium is ready to serve athletes, clubs, and the sports sector in the emirate as soon as possible.

In conclusion, the approval of the designs and location for the new ‘Sports City’ in Sharjah is an exciting development for the sports sector in the emirate. The city will include four sports complexes catering to various sports, with the ‘Sports City Stadium’ at its core. The environmentally conscious design of the stadium and its ability to host local, regional, and global tournaments make it a promising addition to the sports infrastructure in Sharjah. The construction of the stadium will begin soon to ensure its timely completion and availability for athletes and sports enthusiasts. This project highlights the commitment of the Ruler of Sharjah to promote and support sports in the emirate.
