Naples, Italy made headlines recently when Napoli winger David Neres had his watch stolen at gunpoint by two men who smashed a window in the van he was leaving the stadium in. The incident took place after Napoli’s 2-1 victory over Parma at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. Neres’ wife, Kira Winona, took to Instagram to explain why Neres did not stop to sign autographs for fans waiting outside their Naples hotel, where they have been staying since Neres joined Napoli from Benfica 10 days prior.

“David would like to say sorry to the fans who were waiting outside for him. While trying to leave the stadium after the game, two men on a motorcycle smashed the car and robbed him at gunpoint,” Winona wrote in an Instagram story reposted by Neres. This shocking incident highlights the security risks that professional athletes can face, even in their own city.

Unfortunately, Neres is not the only football star to have been targeted by criminals in Italy. In June, retired Italy star Roberto Baggio was also robbed at gunpoint at his home while watching the national team’s game against Spain at the European Championship. The robbers locked Baggio and his family in a room while they stole jewelry, watches, and cash. These incidents serve as a reminder of the importance of personal safety and security measures, even for high-profile individuals like professional footballers.

The robbery of David Neres has sparked concern among fans and the football community about the safety of athletes in Naples and Italy in general. The incident occurred as Neres and his wife were leaving the stadium after a successful match, highlighting how quickly a situation can turn dangerous. Neres’ wife’s message on Instagram shed light on the traumatic experience her husband went through, as well as the impact it had on their interactions with fans.

Despite the troubling robbery, David Neres remains focused on his football career and commitment to Napoli. The Brazilian winger joined the Italian club from Benfica just days before the incident, and he has continued to train and play with dedication. Neres’ resilience and determination in the face of adversity have been commendable, earning him support and admiration from fans and teammates alike. This incident has not deterred Neres from pursuing success on the pitch.

In response to the robbery, Napoli and local authorities have likely heightened security measures to ensure the safety of players and staff. The club will likely work closely with law enforcement to investigate the incident and prevent similar occurrences in the future. The safety and security of athletes, both on and off the field, are of utmost importance, and measures must be taken to protect them from potential risks and threats. As the football world rallies around David Neres in support, it serves as a reminder of the solidarity within the sports community and the importance of ensuring the well-being of athletes.
