In a recent announcement, the Ministry of Interior in Qatar has stated that individuals with traffic violations will not be allowed to travel outside the country through any borders until all fines and due payments are settled. The ministry is enforcing this rule starting from September 1, 2024, to ensure road safety and adherence to traffic laws. This move aims to reduce accidents and congestion on roads by promoting responsible driving practices among citizens, residents, and visitors.

To encourage compliance with traffic regulations, the Ministry of Interior has offered a 50% discount on traffic fines for all motor vehicles until August 31, 2024. This discount applies to citizens, residents, visitors, and citizens of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries. The offer, which began on June 1, 2024, covers violations recorded within the past three years. The ministry has been using its social media channels to remind people about this discount and the importance of following traffic safety rules.

One of the key safety rules highlighted by the Ministry of Interior is the mandatory use of seatbelts while driving. According to Article No. 54 of the Traffic Law, both drivers and front-seat passengers must wear seatbelts while on the road. Fastening the seatbelt not only protects the occupants of the vehicle but also reduces the risk of injury and fatality in the event of a road crash. The ministry emphasizes that following this rule reflects a commitment to traffic regulations and contributes to overall road safety.

In addition to seatbelt use, the Ministry of Interior has also been raising awareness about the dangers of using mobile phones while driving. Research has shown that more than half of fatal traffic accidents and major injuries are caused by the use of mobile phones behind the wheel. The ministry warns that using a mobile phone while driving distracts the driver’s attention and poses risks to their safety and that of others on the road. Violators caught using a mobile phone while driving will face fines without any discount options.

The Ministry of Interior has also been issuing guidelines for safe driving practices, including staying within designated lanes, particularly at intersections and traffic signals. Smooth traffic flow and accident reduction are promoted by following these guidelines. The ministry has emphasized the importance of following traffic signals and designated pedestrian crossings to ensure pedestrian safety. Compliance with safe riding guidelines for electric scooters has also been highlighted to prevent accidents and maintain safety standards on the roads.

The efforts of the Ministry of Interior and the General Directorate of Traffic have led to a significant decrease in road accident fatalities over the past two years. The ministry attributes this improvement to increased awareness of traffic rules, enforcement of speed limits, and the use of seatbelts. Furthermore, the development of modern road infrastructure and regular vehicle inspections have played a crucial role in enhancing road safety in Qatar. By promoting responsible driving practices and ensuring compliance with traffic regulations, the authorities aim to create a safer road environment for everyone in the country.
