England’s Ollie Pope is set to take over as the Test captain for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka, as Ben Stokes is ruled out due to a torn hamstring. This marks a significant moment in Pope’s career, as he will become the 82nd man to lead the England team. Despite this opportunity, Pope acknowledges that the team is still essentially Stokes’s, and he plans to draw on Stokes’s experience and guidance during the series.

Stokes, who has previously led the team in 2020, has left a message for Pope to “do it your own way,” giving him the freedom to lead the team in his own style. Pope is prepared to stick with the basic approach that Stokes has implemented, known as ‘Bazball,’ and is looking forward to having Stokes around to offer advice and support during the series. With Stokes’s presence, Pope feels confident in his ability to lead the team effectively and create a strong, united effort on the field.

Pope sees the opportunity to lead the England team as one of the greatest honors in English cricket and is excited about the challenge ahead. He values the input and guidance that Stokes can offer and plans to use it to enhance his own leadership style. With Stokes’s experience and knowledge, Pope feels supported and confident in his role as captain, knowing that he can turn to Stokes for advice and insights when needed.

In addition to Pope’s appointment as captain, Sri Lanka will see the debut of right-arm medium-fast bowler Milan Rathnayake in the upcoming Test match. Sri Lanka will rely on their pace attack, including Rathnayake, Asitha Fernando, and Vishwa Fernando, with Prabath Jayasuriya as their only specialist spinner. The team is looking to bounce back from a recent loss to England Lions and seek their first Test match win against England since June 2014.

The Test series between England and Sri Lanka will kick off at Old Trafford, followed by matches at Lord’s and the Oval. Fans can expect an exciting series as both teams showcase their talent and compete for victory on the field. With Pope leading England and a solid lineup for Sri Lanka, the series promises to be a thrilling display of cricketing excellence. As the teams prepare for battle, cricket fans around the world eagerly await the action and drama that will unfold during this highly anticipated Test series.
