On August 19, 2024, a rare celestial event known as a super blue moon graced the skies of Qatar. Hundreds of residents gathered at Old Doha Port to witness the spectacle, organized by the Qatar Astronomy and Space Club in collaboration with the Everester Observatory. The event attracted around 300 keen observers who had the opportunity to peer through telescopes and observe the super blue moon. Ajith Everester, founder of the Everester Observatory, stated that this supermoon was the first of four to occur that year.

The super blue moon, a combination of a supermoon and a blue moon, was a stunning sight for those who stayed up late to witness it. Despite intermittent cloud cover, residents were able to catch a glimpse of the moon through telescopes set up at the event. Navin Anand, co-founder of the Qatar Astronomy and Space Club, explained that while the moon may not appear noticeably larger to the naked eye, a side-by-side comparison with photographs taken at its farthest and closest points clearly shows the difference in size and brightness.

According to NASA, a supermoon occurs when the moon is at its closest point to Earth, making it appear larger and brighter than a typical full moon. The blue moon, which occurs only 3% of the time, happens when a season experiences four full moons instead of the usual three. The super blue moon observed in Qatar on August 19 was one of these rare seasonal blue moons, making it a truly unique event for those in attendance.

The Everester Observatory and the Qatar Astronomy and Space Club work together to promote public interest in astronomy by hosting events like the super blue moon viewing. These gatherings provide an opportunity for the public to observe rare celestial phenomena and learn more about the universe. Anyone interested in joining future events can stay updated on announcements from these organizations for more chances to experience and learn about upcoming cosmic wonders right here in Qatar.

For those who may have missed the super blue moon event, contacting Ajith Everester or Navin Anand for information on future events could offer more opportunities to engage with the astronomy community in Qatar. These organizations are dedicated to bringing the wonders of the universe to the public and providing a platform for enthusiasts to explore and appreciate the wonders of the night sky. Don’t miss out on the next opportunity to witness a rare cosmic event in Qatar by staying connected with the Qatar Astronomy and Space Club and the Everester Observatory.
