With rising temperatures in southern Europe, many tourists are seeking cooler destinations in the north to escape the scorching summer heat. Denmark has emerged as a popular choice, with mild temperatures and extended daylight hours making it an attractive summer escape. In July 2024, the national average temperature in Denmark was 16.2C, a stark contrast to the heatwaves experienced in countries like Italy and France, where temperatures have been soaring above 30C and even exceeding 40C.

Copenhagen, Denmark’s bustling capital, has seen a noticeable increase in visitors from southern Europe in recent years. Tourists from countries like France, Spain, Italy, and Greece are flocking to the city to enjoy its cooler climate. The hospitality industry in Copenhagen has adapted to this trend, with hotels reporting an increase in guests from southern European countries. The CEO of Kolpin Hotels, which owns Hotel Sanders in Copenhagen, noted that the number of guests from Spain and Italy has increased significantly in recent years, attributing it to their desire for cooler weather.

The trend of southern European tourists seeking a cool summer escape is not limited to Copenhagen, as other regions of Denmark are also seeing a rise in visitors from countries like France, Switzerland, Italy, and Spain. South Zealand, located outside Copenhagen, has become a popular destination for those looking for a cool summer vacation. Visitors to South Zealand appreciate the mild climate, allowing them to enjoy outdoor activities even in late August. The official tourism organization of South Zealand and Moen has confirmed the increase in visitors from southern Europe, with many seeking respite from the intense heatwaves in their home countries.

In addition to southern European tourists, Denmark is also attracting visitors from other parts of northern Europe, such as the Netherlands and Belgium. These tourists are drawn to Denmark not only for its cooler climate but also for its unique offerings, such as the long summer nights during the solstice when the sun sets as late as 10 PM. The tourism industry in Denmark emphasizes that the country has much to offer beyond just a cool climate, with attractions like the vibrant culture and culinary scene in cities like Copenhagen capturing the interest of international visitors.

Despite the tragic events like the fires in Greece serving as a backdrop, Denmark is positioning itself as a welcoming destination for those seeking a reprieve from the heat. Tourists are encouraged to explore Denmark’s beautiful nature and culture, while also enjoying the cooler temperatures compared to their home countries. As more tourists discover the benefits of a summer escape to Denmark, the country’s tourism industry continues to thrive, welcoming visitors from across Europe and beyond. Whether it’s the extended daylight hours, mild temperatures, or unique cultural offerings, Denmark offers a refreshing and appealing summer destination for travelers seeking a break from the summer heat.
