Qatar Museums, in collaboration with the Ara Güler Museum in Turkey, is currently hosting a photo exhibition at the Museum of Islamic Art titled ‘In the Footsteps of Ara Güler: Exploring the Photographer’s Legacy’. The exhibition showcases the work of Ara Güler, a renowned Turkish photographer and photojournalist born in Istanbul in 1928. Running until November 9, the exhibition is co-curated by Sheikha Maryam Al Thani of Qatar Museums and Tuana Pulak of Ara Güler Museum, offering a unique opportunity for artistic exchange and partnership between the two institutions.

Sheikha Maryam points out that the Museum of Islamic Art provides an exceptional venue for fostering cross-cultural understanding and artistic exchange. The exhibition at the museum creates a visual conversation between Güler’s contemporary photographs and historical artifacts, inviting visitors to explore the continuity and evolution of Turkish heritage. Güler’s work captures the essence of Istanbul and its people, documenting cultural icons and everyday life with equal skill. His photographs serve as a visual archive of Istanbul, showcasing the intersection of traditional and modern elements in Turkish society.

The exhibition at the Museum of Islamic Art celebrates Güler’s legacy as a photographer and photojournalist, showcasing his diverse portfolio through sections like ‘Istanbul: Eternal Tapestry,’ ‘Archaeology: Echoes from the Past,’ ‘Portraits: In Good Company,’ and ‘Film: Hero’s End’. His work is considered important for offering an intimate and comprehensive visual history of Turkey and its cultural heritage. Güler’s dedication to authenticity and charm in capturing moments has made his work an invaluable resource for understanding Turkish cultural history. Through this exhibition, art lovers and photographers in Qatar have the opportunity to learn and get inspired by Güler’s magnificent works.

Sheikha Maryam highlights the collaborative effort behind the exhibition, which brings together a diverse range of Güler’s works and creates a narrative between his photographs and carefully selected objects from Qatar Museums’ General Collection. As a co-curator of the exhibition, she has overseen the selection and presentation of Güler’s works, identifying meaningful connections between his photography and Qatar Museums’ General Collection. This collaboration allows for showcasing Güler’s diverse portfolio while drawing parallels with the museum’s existing artifacts, offering a new perspective on his photography.

Overall, the exhibition ‘In the Footsteps of Ara Güler: Exploring the Photographer’s Legacy’ at the Museum of Islamic Art in Qatar provides a unique opportunity for visitors to delve into the work of Ara Güler, a master of photojournalism and photography. Through showcasing his diverse portfolio, the exhibition celebrates Güler’s legacy as a photographer while highlighting the cultural heritage of Turkey. By creating a visual dialogue between Güler’s contemporary photographs and historical artifacts, the exhibition invites visitors to explore the rich history and cultural evolution of Turkey.
