The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) is gearing up to host a regional forum in the Sultanate of Oman on July 24 and 25. Titled “The Role of National Human Rights Institutions in Planning and Following Up on the Implementation of National Visions in Areas Related to Human Rights,” the forum aims to bring together 200 participants and 50 organisations from the UN and other international and regional bodies. Supported by entities such as the UNDP, OHCHR, and the League of Arab States, this event will focus on strengthening the role of national human rights institutions in aligning national visions with human rights principles.

Organised in collaboration with the Arab Network of National Human Rights Institutions and the Omani Human Rights Commission, the forum will work towards identifying and prioritising human rights issues within national visions. It also aims to harmonise laws and legislation with human rights standards and enhance the capabilities of those responsible for implementing national visions. Chairperson of the NHRC, H E Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah, stresses the importance of activating adherence to the Paris Principles, which guide the implementation of national visions.

Al Attiyah emphasises the need to provide comprehensive data, information, and statistics to measure progress in human rights-related areas and integrate sustainable development goals within national frameworks. The forum seeks to create a platform for dialogue and collaboration among key stakeholders to address human rights challenges and ensure that national visions are in line with international human rights standards. With the participation of key international and regional entities, the event is expected to make significant strides in advancing human rights in the Arab region.

The forum will serve as a pivotal platform for exchanging ideas, sharing best practices, and fostering partnerships among national human rights institutions and other stakeholders. By creating a space for dialogue and collaboration, the event aims to enhance the capacity of national institutions in promoting and protecting human rights. With a focus on aligning national visions with human rights principles, the forum will pave the way for greater cooperation and coordination in advancing human rights in the region.

The NHRC’s regional forum underscores the importance of national human rights institutions in driving sustainable development and promoting human rights in the Arab region. By focusing on aligning national visions with human rights principles and enhancing the capabilities of key stakeholders, the event aims to strengthen the role of these institutions in advancing human rights. With the support of key international and regional entities, the forum is poised to make a meaningful impact in promoting human rights and fostering a culture of respect and dignity for all.
