The Qatar Rail Chess Championship concludes successfully

The 2024 Qatar Rail Chess championship concluded with Algerian Jamal Ferhi and Qatari Khaled Al Jamaat claiming the top two spots. The tournament, held at the Al Bidaa Station of Doha Metro on World Chess Day, utilized a blitz format with 20 players competing. Ferhi emerged victorious with 8.5 points, followed by Al Jamaat with 6 points. Indian Sagan Albin secured third place, scoring 6 points, while Filipino Ryan Mendoza took fourth place with 5.5 points. Kazakh Oleg Em also had 5.5 points but finished behind Mendoza.

Notable Qatari players included Khaled Abdul Rahman Al Khulaifi in 16th place with 3.5 points, Irfan Muhammad in 18th place with 3 points, and Hamad Al Kuwari in 19th place with 2.5 points. The preliminary rounds featured 80 players and were held at the Qatar Chess Training Center. President of the Qatar Chess Association, Mohamed Al Mudahka, highlighted the federation’s efforts to promote chess through partnerships like the one with Qatar Rail. The tournament showcased the participants’ skills and provided valuable experience for all involved.

Ajlan Eid Al Anazi, Head of the Strategy and Business Development Sector at Qatar Rail, expressed his satisfaction with the tournament’s success. He emphasized the focus on enhancing the Doha Metro and Lusail Tram stations as key destinations for residents and visitors. By hosting events like the chess championship, Qatar Rail aims to transform these stations into more than just transit points, but vibrant community hubs. The tournament aligns with Qatar Rail’s social responsibility strategy, which aims to initiate and support various community initiatives.
