The UK’s new Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, is considering changing the country’s immigration policies, particularly in how asylum seekers are processed. He has discussed the possibility of processing asylum claims offshore, similar to an agreement between Albania and Italy. Still, Starmer has made it clear that this is not his top priority at the moment. His focus is on securing the UK’s borders and cracking down on illegal immigration, particularly by targeting people-smuggling gangs. Starmer hopes to reset Britain’s relations with the EU, with a focus on migration, security, and agricultural trade issues.

During a summit with European leaders, Starmer expressed interest in exploring the idea of processing asylum claims closer to their origin. However, he faces challenges in gaining full support from leaders like Emmanuel Macron, who emphasized that solving the issue of illegal migration in the Channel is not a unilateral effort. Starmer is seeking to work closely with organizations like Europol to combat people-smuggling gangs. The UK has seen a significant increase in the number of people crossing the Channel, with over 10,000 estimated to have done so this year.

Starmer acknowledged that he has inherited a difficult situation from the previous government and that resolving the issue of illegal migration will not happen overnight. He is committed to taking practical measures to tackle the root causes of illegal migration and ensuring that those who shouldn’t be in the country are not being processed. While an offshore processing agreement is on the table, Starmer is clear that his immediate focus is on securing the UK’s borders and targeting people-smuggling gangs that facilitate illegal immigration. He hopes to work collaboratively with the EU and other international organizations to address these issues effectively.

In discussions with Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, Starmer explored the possibility of adapting the agreement between Albania and Italy to address asylum claims. While not the central focus of their discussions, Starmer expressed interest in looking at what works and where cases can be processed closer to their origin. He stressed the importance of practical measures, such as dismantling people-smuggling gangs, to address the root causes of illegal migration. While the UK faces challenges in obtaining full support from EU leaders like Macron, Starmer remains committed to collaborating with the EU and other partners to tackle illegal migration effectively.

Starmer’s approach to handling asylum claims and illegal migration reflects a pragmatic and practical strategy aimed at addressing the root causes of the issue. By focusing on securing the UK’s borders, targeting people-smuggling gangs, and working closely with international partners like Europol, he hopes to make significant progress in controlling illegal immigration. Despite facing challenges in gaining full support from EU leaders, Starmer is committed to resetting Britain’s relations with the EU and addressing key areas such as migration, security, and trade. His efforts to explore offshore processing agreements and seek practical solutions demonstrate his determination to tackle the complex issue of illegal migration effectively.
