The Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST) recently announced that the Neo Space Group has won the competition to obtain a permit to provide earth-observation (EO) platform services in Saudi Arabia. This new service aims to create a conducive environment for the private sector to establish and develop EO services and emerging businesses. The goal is to stimulate contributions to the Kingdom’s gross domestic product (GDP) through the development of value-added space products. The permit allows for the establishment and operation of an electronic platform that collects and processes EO data received from satellites, such as images of the Earth’s natural terrain, environmental pollution, and weather.

Furthermore, the platform will serve as a market and digital enabler, connecting EO data providers with value-added service providers who aim to develop and process data into valuable space programs and products. This will allow beneficiaries from both the public and private sectors to access processed EO data for various applications in sectors such as agriculture, environment, logistics, and urban planning. The CST issued the “Request for Permit to Provide EO Platform Services” document in April and invited all interested parties to submit their applications before the July 7 deadline. After evaluating the applications, the Neo Space Group was selected as the qualified applicant based on specified evaluation criteria.

The EO platform initiative is part of CST’s broader efforts to enable space activities, encourage investments in the space sector, and enhance Saudi Arabia’s global position in the field of earth observation. By enabling private sector participation in EO services, the Kingdom aims to boost economic growth and innovation in this emerging industry. The CST’s decision to award the permit to the Neo Space Group highlights the importance of private sector collaboration in driving the development of space-related technologies and services in Saudi Arabia. The platform will provide a valuable resource for businesses and organizations looking to leverage EO data for a wide range of applications across various sectors.

In addition to facilitating the collection and processing of EO data, the platform will play a key role in connecting data providers with service providers to enable the development of value-added space products. This collaborative approach will help to bridge the gap between data collection and application, enabling businesses and organizations to access processed EO data for their specific needs. By streamlining this process, the platform will create new opportunities for innovation and growth in the EO sector, ultimately contributing to the Kingdom’s economic development and global competitiveness in the field of space technology. The CST’s decision to award the permit to the Neo Space Group reflects the government’s commitment to supporting private sector participation in the space sector and driving innovation and economic growth in Saudi Arabia.

Overall, the CST’s initiative to establish an EO platform in Saudi Arabia represents a significant step towards enabling the private sector to play a more active role in the development of space-related technologies and services. By providing a platform for the collection, processing, and distribution of EO data, the Kingdom aims to unlock new opportunities for innovation and growth in the sector. The partnership between the CST and the Neo Space Group underscores the importance of collaboration between government agencies and private sector companies in driving technological advancement and economic development in Saudi Arabia. With the launch of the EO platform, the Kingdom is poised to strengthen its position as a global leader in the field of earth observation and space technology.
