A Facebook group in Dubai called ‘Are We Dating the Same Guy in Dubai’ has sparked controversy by encouraging women to share pictures and personal details of men they’ve dated. The group has quickly gained over 5,000 members, with many migrating from a similar group called ‘Whose Guy Is It Anyway.’ Unlike its predecessor, the new group takes a more explicit approach, with women posting pictures of men and sharing sensitive information and warnings about them.

Despite the popularity of the group, legal experts have warned that it could be violating privacy-related laws in the UAE. Lawyers have cautioned that posting pictures and making comments about individuals without their consent could lead to criminal liability. The potential legal ramifications were highlighted in a viral video by legal consultant Ahmed Odeh, who pointed out that the group may be in violation of Federal Decree-Law No. 34 of 2021 on Combating Rumors and Cybercrimes and Federal Decree-Law No. 31 of 2021 (UAE Penal Code).

Group members have admitted to routinely mocking and criticizing men in the posts, leading to concerns about defamation and privacy laws in the UAE. Legal experts have confirmed that many of the posts violate local laws and could result in penalties. Using social media to publicly criticize individuals for alleged ‘double-dating’ is considered a violation of defamation and privacy laws in the UAE, with potential prison terms and fines prescribed under these laws.

Privacy concerns have also been raised within the group, with some women reporting being added to dubious subgroups without their consent. Efforts to reach the group admins for comments were unsuccessful, as their UAE phone numbers remained unresponsive and messages went unanswered. The group’s WhatsApp extension has also raised concerns about potential privacy breaches and unauthorized sharing of personal information.

As the controversy surrounding the Facebook group continues to grow, it is essential for members to be aware of the legal implications of their actions. Violating privacy laws, defamation, and cybercrime laws in the UAE can have serious consequences, including fines and prison sentences. It is crucial for individuals to exercise caution when sharing personal information online and to respect the privacy and rights of others. Authorities may need to intervene and assess the situation to ensure that the group complies with the law and respects the privacy of individuals involved.
