The United Arab Emirates (UAE) was born on December 2, 1971, stemming from a meeting of rulers that set the stage for its establishment. Senior Emiratis recall life before the union, with 80-year-old Maryam Salem mentioning the hardships of just trying to survive before the country was formed. Living in a remote area, they only learned about the union after it was officially announced. The changes brought by the union were immense, providing stability and safety that eluded them before.

Abdalla Hussain, 63, from the Al-Shuwaihean area, reflected on the dramatic changes in the UAE over the years. In the early days, the UAE lacked infrastructure, and people’s loyalty was to their tribe rather than the country. After the union, the economy flourished, jobs increased, and living conditions gradually improved. Sheikh Zayed’s generosity and vision played key roles in transforming people’s lives, moving many from tents into homes. The union shifted people’s sense of belonging from a tribe to a complete homeland.

Aisha Ali, now 65, reminisced about her childhood in Dubai, citing the difficulties her mother faced just traveling between emirates. Roads were winding and far from the straight highways of today, with traveling between Dubai and Abu Dhabi taking hours. Crossing into Abu Dhabi required showing a large black passport, and residents even had to bring their own bottles for medication. News of the formation of the union was heard on the radio, sparking days of celebration as the six emirates came together, with Ras Al Khaimah joining later.

The sense of community and unity that the union brought to the UAE is reflected in the stories of these senior Emiratis. Before the union, people struggled to survive, with limited opportunities for jobs and financial stability. However, after the union, the economy flourished, and individuals moved from a sense of tribal loyalty to a strong national identity. Sheikh Zayed’s leadership and generosity were instrumental in improving living conditions for many residents, transforming their lives and providing them with a sense of stability and security.

The legacy of the UAE’s formation continues to be celebrated today, with Union Pledge Day serving as a reminder of the unity and progress that the country has achieved since its establishment. The transformation from a collection of tribes to a united homeland is a testament to the vision and wisdom of Sheikh Zayed and the other founding rulers. As the UAE marks its journey from its early days to its current status as a developed nation, the stories of these senior Emiratis serve as a reminder of the resilience and determination of the people who helped build the country.

In conclusion, the United Arab Emirates’ journey from its pre-union days to its current status as a prosperous and stable nation is a testament to the vision and leadership of its founding rulers. The stories of senior Emiratis like Maryam Salem, Abdalla Hussain, and Aisha Ali offer a glimpse into the hardships and transformations that the country has undergone since its formation. With a focus on unity, stability, and progress, the UAE continues to be a shining example of growth and development in the region. The celebration of Union Pledge Day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices and efforts that have gone into building the country into what it is today, inspiring future generations to carry on this legacy of unity and prosperity.
