The Qatar International Arabic Calligraphy Competition, known as Al Raqeem, was inaugurated by Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs H E Ghanem bin Shaheen Al Ghanim at the Qatar Museum in collaboration with the Museum of Islamic Art. This competition is the largest of its kind internationally, with a prize value of up to QR1m. The goal of this event is to enhance Qatar’s cultural standing on a global scale and align with the objectives of the Qatar National Vision 2030 by promoting cultural exchange and showcasing the beauty of Arabic calligraphy.

Dr. Saleh bin Ali Al Marri, the General Manager of Fanar and Chairperson of the organizing committee, highlighted the significance of the competition in promoting cultural initiatives and strengthening Qatar’s global presence. The event aims to serve the Holy Qur’an, elevate the importance of the Arabic language, and showcase the creative capabilities of calligraphers. Through this competition, participants are encouraged to explore different styles of Arabic calligraphy and appreciate its value as a means of sharing cultural heritage among nations.

The collaboration with the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) in organizing this competition is seen as a strategic move to reinforce Qatar’s global, scientific, and cultural efforts. By creating a platform for cultural exchange and dialogue, the competition contributes to nurturing national and Arab identity, reviving Islamic culture and arts, and fostering unity among nations. Dr. Al Marri emphasized the importance of engaging calligraphers worldwide in preserving the heritage of Islam, with a focus on promoting language and understanding among nations through the Arabic script.

With the competition being a biennial event, it offers a valuable opportunity for calligraphers to showcase their talents and for Qatari and Arab youth to develop their skills in this ancient art form. Participants are encouraged to explore the competition’s branches, conditions, and prizes through the official website, providing a chance for both genders over the age of 18 to participate. The competition is not only a celebration of Arabic calligraphy but also a symbol of collaboration and peace through art, serving as a message of solidarity and unity from Qatar to the world.

Director of MIA, Shaika Nassr Al Nassr, expressed her delight in hosting the inauguration ceremony of the Qatar International Arabic Calligraphy Competition at the museum’s venue. The event signifies a significant cultural milestone and demonstrates the harmonization among state institutions to support major cultural initiatives in Qatar. The competition is set to attract calligraphers from around the world, with a judging panel comprising of five senior calligraphers to evaluate the entries. By showcasing various styles of Arabic calligraphy, the competition aims to inspire creativity and appreciation for this traditional art form.

In conclusion, the Qatar International Arabic Calligraphy Competition serves as a platform for promoting cultural exchange, celebrating artistic talent, and preserving the heritage of Arabic calligraphy. Through collaboration with key institutions and engagement with calligraphers worldwide, the competition contributes to enhancing Qatar’s cultural standing and promoting unity among nations. By encouraging participation from diverse backgrounds and age groups, the competition aims to showcase the beauty and significance of Arabic calligraphy on a global scale.
