The recent incidents of e-scooter and bicycle-related accidents in Abu Dhabi have raised concerns among residents, leading to calls for stricter rules for e-scooter riders to ensure public safety. Mohammed Abunael, a marketing executive and resident of Abu Dhabi, shared his experiences witnessing riders without proper gear engaging in reckless riding on the roads, causing potential danger to pedestrians and motorists. The authorities have recorded over 7,800 traffic violations and confiscated 4,474 e-scooters and bicycles in the first half of 2024, highlighting the need for stricter enforcement of regulations.

Residents are expressing frustrations over the chaos caused by e-scooter riders in busy areas such as Deira, Karama, and Al Barsha. Some riders ignore traffic signals and ride recklessly, posing risks to themselves and others. Hannan Khateeb, a sales manager, emphasized the need for stricter rules to prevent accidents and ensure public safety. In response to these concerns, the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has implemented a set of rules for e-scooter riders, including licensing, registration, awareness campaigns, designated lanes, speed limits, and mandatory use of protective gear.

Despite the regulations imposed by the RTA, some e-scooter riders continue to break the law, disregarding safety measures and endangering pedestrians and motorists. Residents, like Egyptian expat Fatima El Hamed, raise concerns about the safety of children and pedestrians due to overspeeding e-scooters and bicycles in public areas. Fatima stressed the importance of vigilant enforcement by authorities and imposition of heavy fines on violators to deter dangerous behaviors and ensure the safety of residents and riders.

Residents are calling for authorities to address the rise in reckless behaviors among e-scooter riders, including riding on pedestrian paths, ignoring traffic signals, and speeding on highways. There is a growing need for increased vigilance and stricter enforcement of regulations to curb dangerous practices and prevent accidents on the roads. With the growing popularity of e-scooters as a mode of transportation, ensuring the safety of riders and pedestrians should be a top priority for authorities in the UAE.

In light of the recent incidents and concerns raised by residents, authorities must take immediate action to address the reckless behaviors of e-scooter riders and enforce stringent rules to ensure public safety. By implementing stricter regulations, increasing awareness campaigns, and imposing penalties on violators, it is possible to create a safer environment for both pedestrians and e-scooter riders on the streets of Abu Dhabi and other emirates in the UAE. The collaborative efforts of government agencies, residents, and riders are essential in promoting responsible and safe e-scooter usage to prevent accidents and protect the well-being of all road users.
