The Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) in Doha has emphasized the importance of taking special care of elderly individuals during periods of intense heat and humidity. Older people may face an increased risk of heat-related illnesses due to challenges in their body’s ability to regulate temperature and adapt to sudden changes. Factors such as chronic conditions, medications, and diminished thirst sensation with age can further impact their ability to cope with the heat.

Dr. Qamar Manzalji, a family medicine consultant at Mesaimeer Health Center, highlighted that heatwaves during summer can lead to serious illnesses like heat exhaustion, heatstroke, sunstroke, and heat stress. To protect themselves from these risks, older people should follow recommendations such as staying hydrated by consuming water and fluids like fresh juices, eating watery fruits and vegetables, and avoiding beverages with high caffeine content.

It is essential for older people to seek shaded areas, avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, choose appropriate clothing and accessories, take cool showers, apply cold compresses, and engage in outdoor activities during cooler times of the day. By adopting these strategies, they can lower their risk of heat-related health issues and stay comfortable in hot weather conditions. Regular hydration, sunscreen application, and monitoring for symptoms of dehydration are also crucial elements in maintaining their health during the summer months.

Additionally, it’s important for older individuals to have a backup plan in case of extreme heat or humidity by staying indoors in a cool, air-conditioned environment or engaging in physical activities in climate-controlled settings. Consulting with a doctor before exercising in hot weather and taking precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses are recommended. By following these guidelines and paying attention to their bodies’ signals, elderly individuals can enjoy a safe and healthy summer season.
