Naomi Campbell, the iconic supermodel, is showcasing her stylish looks and runway walk at London’s V&A museum in a new exhibition titled “Naomi: In Fashion”. Considered the first of its kind dedicated to a model, the exhibition explores Campbell’s career, influence, and activism through key looks she has modelled. Opening to the public on Saturday, the exhibition features glamorous outfits, towering heels, fashion photos, and magazine covers curated by former British Vogue editor Edward Enninful. Senior curator of fashion at the V&A, Sonnet Stanfill, highlights the importance of acknowledging the role of models in the fashion industry, praising Campbell for her 40-year career that has spotlighted emerging creatives.

Campbell, who began her career as a teenager, has worked with renowned fashion houses such as Versace, Chanel, Prada, and Dolce & Gabbana, while also supporting African designers. As the first Black model to grace the covers of French Vogue, Time magazine, and American Vogue’s September issue, Campbell has broken barriers and paved the way for diversity in the fashion industry. The exhibition includes outfits from famous designers like Gianni Versace and Azzedine Alaïa, as well as pieces from African designers like Kenneth Ize and Thebe Magugu, showcasing the breadth of Campbell’s influence and style.

Among the notable pieces on display are the Dolce & Gabbana dress Campbell wore on her last day of community service, and the blue platform shoes from the infamous moment when she fell on the runway at Vivienne Westwood’s show. The exhibition, which will run until April 6, 2025, offers visitors a chance to experience Campbell’s career through written and audio commentary. Additionally, there is a makeshift catwalk where visitors can emulate Campbell’s iconic runway walk. The showcase celebrates Campbell’s legacy as a trailblazer in the fashion industry, using her platform to advocate for diversity and young talent.

The exhibition comes at a time when the fashion industry is increasingly recognizing the importance of representation and inclusivity. By showcasing Campbell’s career and impact, the V&A aims to shed light on the often overlooked role of models in shaping the fashion landscape. Campbell’s remarkable journey from a teenage model to a global fashion icon serves as an inspiration for aspiring models and designers alike. Through her collaborations with top designers and magazines, Campbell has not only made a mark in the industry but also used her influence to uplift emerging talents, particularly from underrepresented backgrounds.

Visitors to the exhibition can expect to be immersed in Campbell’s world of glamour, sophistication, and activism. From her iconic runway moments to her philanthropic efforts, the showcase offers a comprehensive look at Campbell’s multifaceted career. With a mix of high fashion ensembles and pieces from emerging designers, the exhibition highlights Campbell’s ability to seamlessly navigate between established luxury brands and emerging talent. By acknowledging her impact and influence, the exhibition pays tribute to Campbell’s legacy as a true fashion icon and trailblazer for diversity and inclusion in the industry.

In conclusion, “Naomi: In Fashion” at the V&A museum in London offers a unique opportunity to delve into the world of one of fashion’s most iconic figures. Through a curated display of her most memorable looks and moments, visitors can gain a deeper understanding of Campbell’s influence and legacy. As the fashion industry continues to evolve, Campbell’s enduring impact serves as a testament to the power of diversity and representation in shaping the future of fashion. The exhibition is a celebration of Campbell’s unparalleled career and a tribute to her role in breaking barriers and championing inclusivity in the world of fashion.
