The new European Parliament is set to welcome a diverse group of MEPs, including social media influencers who have managed to secure seats through the recent European elections. Despite their unconventional backgrounds, these influencers are now in a position to shape European policies over the next five years. Among these newly elected MEPs are Fidias Panayiotou from Cyprus, Filip Turek from the Czech Republic, Alvise Pérez from Spain, and Jordan Bardella from France.

Fidias Panayiotou, a 24-year-old Cypriot known for his YouTube videos, openly admits to having no prior political experience before being elected to the European Parliament. Despite some controversial videos in the past, Fidias now aims to motivate young people to get involved in politics. It remains uncertain whether he will join a political party or remain unaffiliated in the European Parliament.

Filip Turek from the Czech Republic is a complex character with multiple interests, including politics, entrepreneurship, and car racing. Despite controversies surrounding his past associations with neo-Nazi paraphernalia, Turek managed to secure two seats in the European Parliament with his party, Přísaha and Motorists. He is currently in negotiations to join the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group in the Parliament.

Alvise Pérez, a 34-year-old Spaniard with a controversial social media presence, was elected to the European Parliament in the recent elections. Known for his anti-vaccine and anti-lockdown views, Pérez founded a right-wing, anti-establishment group called “Se Acabó la Fiesta” and campaigned primarily on social media platforms. Despite his popularity, Pérez announced that he would not be traveling to Brussels to fulfill his duties as an MEP.

Jordan Bardella, a French MEP affiliated with the National Rally party, gained popularity as an influencer on social media before entering politics. Starting as a YouTuber and active participant in gaming forums, Bardella has now amassed a significant following on platforms like TikTok. His ability to engage with younger audiences has positioned him as a notable figure in French politics.

The rise of social media influencers in European politics has sparked debates about the role of social media in engaging with younger voters and challenging traditional political structures. Experts believe that these influencers are adept at mobilizing public anger and grievances online, presenting these sentiments in a relatable and appealing manner. As they continue to gain influence among younger demographics, political parties are urged to modernize and adapt to the changing landscape of digital engagement.

In conclusion, the presence of social media influencers in the European Parliament reflects the evolving nature of political communication and engagement in the digital age. These influencers bring a fresh perspective and approach to policymaking, challenging traditional norms and structures. As they navigate their roles as elected officials, their ability to connect with younger audiences and mobilize online support will continue to shape the future of European politics.
