The Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, H E Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh Al Khulaifi, had separate meetings in Beijing with high-ranking officials from Somalia and Sudan. He met with Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Somalia, H E Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, and Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sudan, H E Hussein Awad Ali. These meetings took place during the 10th Ministerial Conference of the Chinese-Arab States Cooperation Forum. Al Khulaifi also met with H E Deng Li from the Communist Party Committee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China and Undersecretary of the Foreign Ministry for Political Affairs of Oman, H E Sheikh Khalifa bin Ali Al Harthy, on the sidelines of the forum. The discussions during these meetings focused on cooperation and ways to further develop their partnerships.

The meeting with Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi of Somalia likely involved discussions on strengthening diplomatic relations between Qatar and Somalia. Somalia has faced political instability and security challenges in recent years, and Qatar has been actively engaged in providing humanitarian aid and support. Qatar has also been involved in various infrastructure projects in Somalia, showing a commitment to rebuilding the country’s infrastructure and promoting economic development. Cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, and security may have been on the agenda during the meeting between Al Khulaifi and Minister Fiqi.

The meeting with Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sudan, H E Hussein Awad Ali, may have focused on discussing areas of mutual interest and cooperation between Qatar and Sudan. Sudan has been undergoing a period of political transition following the ousting of long-time President Omar al-Bashir in 2019. Qatar has been supportive of Sudan’s transition towards democracy and has pledged financial assistance to support the country’s economic reforms. Discussions between Al Khulaifi and Minister Ali may have included ways to further enhance bilateral relations and explore opportunities for collaboration in various sectors.

The meetings with Chinese and Omani officials indicate the importance of Qatar’s relationships with key countries in the region. China is a major economic and strategic partner for Qatar, with significant investments in various sectors, including energy, infrastructure, and trade. Strengthening ties with China through high-level visits and exchanges is crucial for advancing shared goals and promoting cooperation on regional and global issues. Similarly, Oman has historically had close ties with Qatar, with both countries sharing cultural, economic, and strategic interests. Meeting with Undersecretary Sheikh Khalifa bin Ali Al Harthy from the Omani Foreign Ministry underscores the commitment to deepening bilateral relations and exploring new avenues for collaboration.

Overall, the meetings in Beijing between Minister Al Khulaifi and officials from Somalia, Sudan, China, and Oman are indicative of Qatar’s continued efforts to strengthen diplomatic ties, expand partnerships, and enhance cooperation with key countries in the region and beyond. These meetings serve as an opportunity to discuss common interests, explore areas of collaboration, and reaffirm commitment to promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the region. By engaging in constructive dialogue and building strategic partnerships, Qatar aims to play a proactive and positive role in addressing regional and global challenges and contributing to the promotion of mutual understanding and cooperation among nations.
