Barcelona Spanish coach Xavi Hernandez held a press conference after being sacked by the club, stating that he is leaving with a “clear conscience”. President Joan Laporta made the decision to remove Xavi just weeks after expressing his delight in having him stay for the final year of his contract. Despite announcing earlier in January that he would leave at the end of the season, Xavi and Laporta changed course after a surge in form in April. However, media reports suggested that Laporta had decided to sack Xavi, which the coach was unaware of until the decision was made.

Xavi expressed his feelings in a news conference ahead of his final match against Sevilla, stating that he is proud of the work they have done despite not achieving their objectives this season. Barcelona was unable to secure any silverware this year, with Real Madrid winning the Spanish title and Paris Saint-Germain eliminating them in the Champions League quarter-finals. Xavi expressed his gratitude towards Laporta and the board for the opportunity to coach the club and stated that he is leaving in peace, hoping to work with Barcelona again in the future.

As a player, Xavi had a successful career at Barcelona, making 767 appearances and winning numerous titles. The former Bayern Munich and Germany coach Hansi Flick is rumored to be the favorite to replace Xavi. Flick led Bayern to a treble in 2020, including a memorable 8-2 victory over Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-finals. Despite being sacked by Germany in 2023 after a poor run of results, Flick is seen as a strong candidate to take over as the new Barcelona coach.

Xavi’s departure marks the end of his coaching tenure at Barcelona, which had its ups and downs throughout the season. However, he leaves with a sense of pride and gratitude for the opportunity to lead the club. The decision to remove him was made by Laporta and the board, with the intention of bringing a change in direction for the club. Xavi remains hopeful that one day he will be able to return and work with Barcelona again.

The future of Barcelona now rests on the shoulders of a new coach, with Hansi Flick being the frontrunner for the position. Flick’s successful track record with Bayern Munich and experience at the international level make him a strong candidate to lead Barcelona back to success. As Xavi bids farewell to the club, the focus shifts to the next chapter for Barcelona and the direction they will take under new leadership.
