The Omani Committee for International Humanitarian Law recently organized a symposium titled “International Humanitarian Law: The Reality and the Aspirations” in Muscat. The two-day event, held at the Diplomatic Club in cooperation with the Mission of the International Committee of the Red Cross, aimed to spread knowledge of international humanitarian law, address challenges in its implementation, and classify armed conflicts. Sheikh Humaid Ali Al Maani, Head of the Global Affairs Department at the Foreign Ministry and Chairman of the Omani Committee, highlighted the importance of achieving common goals in humanitarian action and emphasized the need to protect victims of armed conflicts and their property.

Abdullah Mohammed Said, Head of the Mission of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Muscat, commended Oman’s efforts to promote respect for international humanitarian law, particularly in the ongoing conflict in Gaza. He also praised Oman’s support for relief aid efforts in the region and emphasized the importance of complying with and effectively implementing international humanitarian law. The symposium addressed various topics, including the relationship between international humanitarian law and humanitarian action, the principles of the use of force, and mechanisms for implementing international humanitarian law.

The symposium coincided with the 75th anniversary of the 1949 four Geneva Conventions, which are the most ratified global pacts. These conventions have been signed by 196 countries and aim to alleviate the suffering of civilians and other victims of armed conflicts. Oman’s commitment to these conventions is reflected in its establishment of the Omani Committee for International Humanitarian Law and its advocacy for minimizing human suffering and upholding international humanitarian law. The symposium highlighted the importance of achieving better implementation and compliance with international humanitarian law to protect victims of armed conflicts and promote humanitarian action.

Overall, the symposium served as a platform for discussing the challenges and opportunities in implementing international humanitarian law and emphasized the importance of protecting victims of armed conflicts. By bringing together government officials and experts in the field, the event aimed to spread awareness of international humanitarian law, promote compliance with its principles, and enhance support for humanitarian efforts in conflict zones. Oman’s continued commitment to international humanitarian law and its efforts to promote respect for the Geneva Conventions demonstrate its dedication to alleviating human suffering and promoting peace and security in conflict-affected areas.
