Rory McIlroy, a professional golfer, displayed a strong performance during the first round of the PGA Championship at the Valhalla Golf Course, ending the day three shots back of the lead. Despite his impressive round of 66, McIlroy felt like his game was not at its best and expressed a defensive attitude when questioned about potentially leaving shots on the course. He mentioned that he was overall satisfied with his score, highlighting some good moments including a chip-in on the 6th hole.

Drawing comparisons to his previous major win, where he also started with a first-round 66, McIlroy reflected on the similarities and is hoping to maintain that momentum in this tournament. During the PGA Championship in 2014, he went on to secure the victory with consistent performances in the subsequent rounds. With a strong start to this year’s tournament, McIlroy seems focused on maintaining his form and staying competitive in the upcoming rounds.

McIlroy’s round on Thursday was not without challenges, but he managed to save crucial shots during critical moments in his game. A scramble par on the 18th hole followed by a birdie on the 1st hole of his back nine helped him maintain momentum and avoid potential setbacks. These key moments played a significant role in keeping him in contention and improving his overall score.

The soft course conditions due to rain early on in the day benefited players like McIlroy, who noted that the greens were forgiving and allowed for easier second shots and chip shots. The softer greens, especially for players coming from courses with firmer conditions, provided an advantage and contributed to the lower scores seen throughout the first round. McIlroy acknowledged that if the greens firm up slightly, the trend of red numbers on the scoreboard might continue as the tournament progresses.

Despite his defensive stance on his performance, McIlroy’s resilience and ability to navigate through challenging situations on the course showcased his competitive spirit and determination. As one of the top contenders in the field, McIlroy’s strong start at the PGA Championship sets the stage for an exciting tournament with potential for more impressive performances in the coming days. With the experience of a past major win on the same grounds, McIlroy will aim to harness that success and use it as motivation to secure another title.
