Colm McLoughlin, the executive vice chairman and CEO of Dubai Duty Free, has had an illustrious career spanning 55 years in the travel retail industry and 41 at the helm of DDF. He will be stepping down at the end of this year, becoming the longest-serving staff member of the duty-free. He will continue to be involved with DDF in an advisory capacity after his retirement.
McLoughlin started his career at Shannon Airport in Ireland, where he was part of the team that launched the first duty-free shop in the world. In 1983, he was invited to Dubai to help launch Dubai Duty Free and has been a part of the organization ever since. He credits the government’s vision of making Dubai the best place to live and do business for the success of DDF. Under the guidance of Sheikh Mohammed, DDF has become one of the best duty-free shops in the world.
Throughout his tenure, McLoughlin has been involved in various projects, sporting events, and sponsorships to promote Dubai Duty Free. The company has won numerous awards and has consistently increased its business every year. Sales have reached Dh112.8 billion since its inception, with daily sales now averaging Dh20-21 million. Ramesh Cidambi will take over as managing director, and Salah Tahlak as deputy managing director in 2024.
Dubai Duty Free’s popular $1 million and other raffle draws have contributed to its success and popularity. The company has given away over $480 million in prizes, with multiple winners of luxury cars and cash prizes. McLoughlin recalls the early days of DDF when they achieved Dh1 million in sales and now see daily sales of over Dh20 million. He anticipates sales to reach Dh8 billion this year and double in the next 10 years.
One of the key aspects of DDF’s success has been its focus on internal promotions and staff loyalty. McLoughlin highlights the importance of taking care of employees and rewarding them for their hard work. The company has a management committee that meets weekly to discuss ideas and strategies. Moving forward, McLoughlin plans to continue playing an advisory role with DDF after retirement, with Dubai being his main residence.
As McLoughlin prepares for retirement, he plans to take a trip to Vancouver and Alaska before returning to Dubai to enjoy his favorite pastime, golf.
