Nassau, Bahamas: Track and field is set to receive the Netflix treatment with a new series focusing on sprinters scheduled to air ahead of the Paris Olympics this summer. World Athletics president Sebastian Coe believes that this series will help showcase the global appeal of the sport to a wider audience. With previous Netflix series like Formula One, golf, and tennis gaining popularity, Coe is hopeful that the six episodes centered around sprinting, filmed during last year’s world championships in Budapest, will have a similar impact.

Coe highlighted the truly global nature of athletics, with athletes from 46 countries winning medals at the Budapest worlds, and athletes from 75 countries securing top-eight places. He emphasized the statistical difficulty of winning a track and field medal compared to other sports, and expressed the importance of promoting the sport and giving athletes exposure. With the absence of big-name stars like Usain Bolt, Coe sees the Netflix series as an opportunity to showcase the talent and diversity of track and field athletes.

One of the stars of the Netflix series, American sprinter Noah Lyles, expressed his excitement for the opportunity to tell the story of his journey in track and field. Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs also praised the series for providing insight into the hard work and dedication of athletes off the track. Both athletes emphasized the importance of showcasing these stories to the audience, giving them a glimpse into the lives of track and field athletes beyond just the races they compete in.

Coe acknowledged the risks involved in showcasing track and field athletes, noting that their transferable skills make them attractive prospects for other sports like basketball and American football. However, he believes that the talent in track and field is unparalleled and hopes that the Netflix series will help highlight this to a broader audience. With plans already in motion for a second series based on the Paris Olympics, Coe is excited about the potential for the series to showcase the extraordinary talent and diversity within the sport.

In conclusion, the upcoming Netflix series focusing on sprinters in track and field is expected to shed light on the global appeal and diversity of the sport. With athletes from around the world competing and winning medals, the series aims to tell the stories of these athletes and showcase their dedication and hard work. Despite the challenges of retaining track and field talent due to its transferable nature, Coe is confident that the series will help elevate the sport and bring recognition to the incredible talent within it. As the series prepares to debut ahead of the Paris Olympics, the stage is set for track and field to reach a new audience and inspire viewers with the stories of its remarkable athletes.
