The National Museum of Qatar recently hosted a special performance by the Gugak Orchestra titled “Eolssu! Korean Traditional Melody to the World” as part of the 50th anniversary celebration of Qatar-Korea relations. The unique vibration, rhythm, and extreme highs and lows of Gugak set it apart from other traditional music genres, as highlighted by the Art Director and Conductor of the Gugak Orchestra, Lee Yong Tak. Lee emphasized the importance of maintaining a connection with the audience and conveying the soul and emotions behind the music.

Throughout the 45-minute performance, the audience was captivated by six thought-provoking performances that offered a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Korean musical heritage. From the opening piece “Awakened Steppe” to the modern folk songs “A Tiger is Coming” and “Whispers of Love,” the audience was engaged and enthralled. Each performance showcased the versatility and beauty of Korean traditional music and left the audience tapping their feet, clapping, and swaying to the rhythm.

The grand finale of the performance was the rendition of the World Cup Qatar 2022 Song “Hayya Hayya (Better Together)” in Korean, a fitting end to a mesmerizing evening of music harmonizing the music of Qatar and Korea. The Gugak Orchestra’s upcoming performance in Germany adds to their extensive list of international performances, including countries like Mongolia, Hawaii, Brazil, and the United States. The conductor also discussed the limitations of Artificial Intelligence in replicating the depth of human emotion and connection in music.

In a world where music serves as a universal language, Gugak continues to unite hearts and souls, weaving connections across cultures and backgrounds. The performance at the National Museum of Qatar showcased the essence of Gugak as more than just music; it’s a celebration of joy, unity, and the indomitable human spirit. Lee Yong Tak’s dedication to promoting Gugak both in Korea and globally has allowed audiences to experience the unique vibration and emotion of Korean traditional music, creating a lasting impact on listeners.
