Many parents in Dubai are starting to receive notifications about an increase in school fees for the upcoming academic year. While Indian schools began their academic session in April, international curriculum schools will start in September. Private schools in Dubai were recently allowed to increase their fees by up to 5.2 percent, based on their performance in the latest annual inspections. Schools with declining ratings were not eligible for any fee hikes. The Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) announced an Education Cost Index of 2.6 percent in early April, allowing schools to adjust their fees accordingly.

Some parents have already received circulars informing them of the fee hikes. For example, Indian expat Sajna Ali mentioned that her children’s school will be raising tuition fees by 2.6 percent based on their ‘Good’ rating in the KHDA inspection. She expressed concerns about the rising cost of living and hopes that the fee increase will result in better education quality and possibly higher salaries for teachers. The Cambridge International School also sent a circular to parents detailing the fee adjustment that will apply to all years from the beginning of the academic term.

This is the second consecutive year that schools in Dubai are allowed to increase fees after a period of fee freeze due to the pandemic. Last academic year, schools were permitted to raise fees by up to 6 percent. The fee increase framework applies to all tuition fees and services provided by the school but does not include outsourced services or optional activities. Another parent, Fathimath Manal, whose children attend GEMS Our Own Indian School at Al Quoz, mentioned that the authorized fee increase for their school amounts to 2.6 percent, which translates to approximately Dh200 per child, bringing relief as they consider the school affordable.

The circulars sent to parents by schools emphasize their commitment to providing high-quality education and state that the fees play a crucial role in funding such standards of teaching and learning. With the rising cost of living and extracurricular activities, parents are becoming more concerned about school fee increases becoming an annual occurrence. They hope that these fee hikes will lead to an improvement in education standards and possibly better facilities for students. As schools prepare to start the new academic year, parents are advised to stay informed about any fee adjustments that may affect their children’s education.

In conclusion, the recent notifications about school fee increases in Dubai have sparked discussions among parents about the impact on their finances and their children’s education. The fee hikes come after a period of fee freezes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with schools now being allowed to increase fees based on their performance in the KHDA inspection. Parents are hopeful that the fee increases will translate into better education quality and possibly higher salaries for teachers. As the academic year approaches, parents are encouraged to stay informed about any changes in school fees and to communicate with school authorities about any concerns they may have.
